Verstappen vindt randzaken maar niks en rijdt liefst 24/7 in F1-wagen

'Het leukste aan F1-coureur zijn?' Een simpele vraag van een fan aan Max Verstappen tijdens de persconferentie voorafgaand aan de Spaanse GP. De Nederlander gaf - zoals zo vaak - op een eigenzinnige manier antwoord. ''Het rijden van een Formule 1-wagen...'' Er viel een stilte in de zaal, wachtend op meer tekst en uitleg, maar Verstappens kaken bleven op elkaar.

De ondervrager doorbrak iets wat ongemakkelijk het stilzwijgen en vroeg of de Red Bull-coureur iets meer kon vertellen over het besturen van zo'n snel gevaarte. ''De snelheid, de kracht van het remmen. Dat is het leukste van F1-coureur zijn. Buiten de auto is het niet zo leuk'', zei de meervoudig GP-winnaar met een ondeugende glimlach.

De verslaggever - buiten beeld - leek verbaasd. De Nederlander herhaalde het nogmaals met een grote grijns. ''Nee, het is echt niet leuk, het liefste rijd ik 24 uur per dag, zeven dagen per week in een F1-auto.'' Yuki Tsunoda die naast hem zat, grinnikte mee en begreep waar de Nederlander op doelde met ''these kind of things''. Media -en sponsorverplichtingen: het hoort erbij, maar dat kan de Red Bull-coureur niet bekoren.

Bij deze persco ging het ook over Verstappens 100ste Grand Prix bij Red Bull aankomende zondag. Des te meer om terug te blikken op zijn dienstjaren bij het Oostenrijkse topteam. De interviewer vroeg naar wat hoogtepunten. Verstappen moest smakelijk lachen om deze retorische vraag: ''De eerste race met Red Bull [natuurlijk]. Dat was een goede start met het team'' Over andere herinneringen moest de Limburger nadenken, maar er waren meer goede dan slechte. Overwinningen en veel podia vergeet je niet zo snel.

Of Verstappen opnieuw in Spanje kan zegevieren zoals in 2016 blijft koffiedik kijken, maar de 23-jarige coureur is in ieder geval blij om in Barcelona zijn rondjes af te werken. ''Het is prettig om terug te zijn op een baan met veel grip. Het wordt interessant hoe competitief we gaan zijn. De RB16B blijft zich ontwikkelen en het is niet makkelijk om de auto af te stellen. Het hangt af van de baancondities en de wagens zijn erg gevoelig.''

De kwalificatie gaat dit weekend een sleutelrol spelen op het Circuit de Catalunya waar inhalen meer de uitzondering is dan de regel. Verstappen zal zijn aanpak hierop niet aanpassen en benadert dit weekend net als alle anderen. ''Je probeert altijd zover mogelijk vooraan te staan in de kwalificatie. We gaan gewoon hetzelfde doen zoals altijd.''

de kop is verkeerd, moet eigenlijk zijn
verstappen vind alleen racen leuk en het randgebeuren niet zo.
24/7 rijden in een f1 auto kan niet leuk zijn omdat het opperste concentratie vergt

  de kop is niet verkeerd, Al is het fysiek onmogelijk. Je moet ook tanken/eten/sch**ten/p*issen/Af en toe onderdelen vervangen. Slapen kan je wel in dat ding maar dan rijdt je niet.

  Hij heeft natuurlijk helemaal gelijk......een grotere "pain in the ass" dan het verzamelde journaille bestaat er niet voor een topsporter.
  Al die verplichte optredens,, het achterbakse gekonkel, steeds dezelfde vragen komen je op den duur de strot uit.
  Maar de fans moeten gepleased worden en de creativiteit daarin is ver te zoeken.
