Sergio Perez beseft: "Het is nog te vroeg om over contractverlenging te praten"

Sergio Perez zegt dat het "te vroeg" is om te overwegen of Red Bull hem in 2022 aan boord wil houden. Het team had de afgelopen jaren moeite om een degelijke teamgenoot te vinden voor Max Verstappen.

Pierre Gasly en Alexander Albon werden gewogen en te licht bevonden waarna zij werden verwezen naar het gat van de deur. De ervaren Perez lijkt het beter te doen tot dusver, maar de Mexicaan gaf aan nog altijd te moeten wennen aan zijn nieuwe omgeving en zijn nieuwe rol sinds hij uitkomt voor het topteam.

Hij zegt echter dat hij een "grote stap" heeft gezet in Portimao en legt uit dat hij langzaamaan leert hoe hij "totaal anders moet rijden om het meeste uit de auto en de banden te halen".

Perez zei dat hij Red Bull niet zal vragen om de auto te wijzigen zodat de bolide alleen aan zijn wensen en voorkeuren zal voldoen.

Perez: "Daar is in zo'n drukke agenda veel te weinig tijd voor", benadrukt hij. "Dan dwaal je van het goede pad af. De manier waarop ik ernaar kijk, is hoe Max de auto snel weet te besturen, dan moet ik het ook in die richting zoeken. Ik moet gewoon mijn weg vinden en mij aanpassen."

Dat klinkt als muziek in de oren van zijn baas, dr. Helmut Marko. "Eindelijk een coureur die de auto niet zelf wil ontwerpen", aldus de Oostenrijker.

Hij vervolgt: "Als we het over Sergio hebben, dan boekt hij gestaag vooruitgang in zowel de kwalificatie als de race", vertelde Marko aan RTL in Barcelona. "Alle coureurs die van team wisselen, hebben wat tijd nodig, wat we deels kunnen zien bij Carlos Sainz en heel duidelijk bij Ricciardo."

Marko vervolgt: "Met een beetje geluk kan hij misschien strijden om het podium."

Marko wordt ook geciteerd door Sport1: "In de laatste drie races werd vrij duidelijk dat alleen Hamilton en Verstappen kunnen vechten voor het kampioenschap.Perez worstelt nog steeds om te wennen, maar hij wordt steeds sterker. Over het algemeen en in termen van consistentie mist hij simpelweg de laatste twee tienden op Max."

Marko vervolgt: "Aan de andere kant zien we dat Bottas op het cruciale moment niet erg sterk is en zijn zwakkere dagen heeft, zoals we zagen in Imola."

Toen hem werd gevraagd of hij nog steeds blij is Albon te hebben vervangen door Perez, zei Marko: "Ja. Hij heeft ruimte voor verbetering en hij doet dat door te verbeteren."

Volgens Sergio Perez zelf is het nog "te vroeg" om te speculeren of hem een contractverlenging voor 2022 wordt aangeboden door Red Bull.

Perez: "Het belangrijkste is om van het werk te genieten, en ik hou van de cultuur bij Red Bull", zei hij. "De filosofie is heel anders dan ik gewend ben. Laten we eens kijken wat ons te wachten staat in de volgende races en hoe onze relatie zich ontwikkelt, maar ik hoop dat we onze samenwerking zullen voortzetten."

Nuchtere gozer zo het lijkt, en het lijkt mij logisch dat hij eerst een paar podia en een enkele overwinning moet scoren om een contractverlenging te rechtvaardigen.

Me dunkt dat het daarvoor te vroeg is. Ik denk zelfs dat Perez er helemaal niet zelf over moet beginnen, zeker niet tot na de laatste race van het seizoen.

De logische opvolger is uiteraard Tsunoda, maar die heeft na een veelbelovende debuutrace twee races gereden waarin hij a) ver verwijderd was van Gasly en b) meerdere slordigheidsfouten beging. Vorig jaar was hij in de GP2 ook pas in de tweede helft niet meer wisselvallig, en het seizoen is natuurlijk nog lang, maar voorlopig hoeft Checo zich geen zorgen te maken over dit aanstormende talent.

Dat de journalist überhaupt met deze vraag komt. Top om te horen dat Perez zijn rijstijl aanpast aan de auto ipv de auto naar zijn rijstijl. Dat zou Vettel ook eens moeten doen.
