Lewis Hamilton verstevigt leiding in het WK door winst in Spanje: "Ik was echt aan het jagen"

Ondanks de snoeiharde inhaalactie van Max Verstappen op Lewis Hamilton weet de regerend wereldkampioen Hamilton de winst te pakken tijdens de Grote Prijs van Spanje. De Britse wereldkampioen loopt daarmee verder uit in de strijd om het wereldkampioenschap.

De Brit is dan ook uitzinnig na afloop van de race. Voor de microfoon zegt Hamilton: "Ik wil de fans bedanken, dit was de eerste race met fans langs de baan en het is geweldig om de Britse vlag te zien langs de baan en dat hebben we zo lang niet kunnen zien, dus dank aan de fans. Ik voel mij geweldig na deze race."

De Brit zag Verstappen in de eerste bocht voorbij komen. "Bij de start zat het zo dicht op elkaar. Er lag zoveel rubber aan de binnenkant, en de Red Bull had zo'n geweldige start dat ik hem niet achter mij kon houden. Ik kon de Red Bull niet achter mij houden. Daarna was ik echt aan het jagen en ik zat er zo dichtbij de hele tijd. Ik kon het allemaal maar net aan om het de banden te laten uithouden."

Het lukte de Red Bull niet om weg te lopen bij de Mercedes. Na de eerste serie pitstops had Verstappen een iets grotere voorsprong, maar Lewis Hamilton reed dat gat op de gele medium-banden snel weer dicht.

Hamilton: "Het is een behoorlijk gat dat ik dicht moest rijden, meer dan twintig seconden, maar dat was een goede gok en een geweldige strategie van het team.".

Hamilton vervolgt: "Het was het hele weekend al de opzet om het zo te doen om een tweestopper te maken met twee sets mediums. Zelfs als een eenstopper beter leek, wist ik uit ervaring hier dat een tweestopper beter zou gaan uitpakken. Op het laatst moest ik echt bepalen of ik de oproep van het team zou negeren of dat ik zou gehoorzamen en ik deed wat het team mij vroeg en het pakte goed uit."

Het gat tussen Hamilton en Verstappen is nu 14 punten. De Red Bull-coureur wist nog een extra punt te behalen door de snelste ronde neer te zetten. Een aantal ronden voor het einde kwam hij da ook naar binnen voor zacht rubber. Hamilton staat na vier races op 94 punten, Verstappen op 80.

  Dat denk ik dus ook
  Mercedes heeft zoals de afgelopen jaren alles onder controle, maar geeft RedBull (en de wereld) de illusie dat ze er echt bijna zijn.
  Daardoor gaat RedBull volledig op de doorontwikkeling van de 2021 auto, terwijl Mercedes is al meer met de 2022 auto bezig is.
  Mercedes gaat gedurende het seizoen de overcapaciteit in het vermogen verder openschoven.
  En begint 2022 ook weer met een voorsprong.
  Je gaat het pas zien als je het door hebt.

Nadat Max Lewis had ingehaald, dacht ik dat het een gelopen race was. Vrij snel werd duidelijk dat Max niet bij Lewis kon wegrijden. Dit is voor mij de bevestiging dat Mercedes in de race over de snelste wagen bezit. In de kwalificatie is de RBR net iets sneller. Ik vind het sneu voor Max dat hij nu al tegen aan achterstand van 14 punten aankijkt. Hij bevindt zich momenteel in een lastige situatie. Bij RBR blijven of naar Mercedes overstappen?
