Toto Wolff wil dat Esteban Ocon bij Alpine blijft racen

Esteban Ocon lijkt niet in de race te zijn voor een Mercedes-stoeltje voor 2022. Mercedes-teambaas Toto Wolff heeft duidelijk gemaakt dat hij Lewis Hamilton wil behouden, maar sterke geruchten brengen George Russell in verband met de huidige positie van Valtteri Bottas.

Beter afstellen

Ocon, die net als Russell Mercedes-junior is, wordt momenteel uitgeleend aan Alpine en het lijkt erop dat hij daar vooralsnog zal blijven. De Fransman maakt momenteel indruk bij team uit Enstone naast F1-legende Fernando Alonso.

"Ik heb deze winter een paar wijzigingen aangebracht in mijn team", zei Ocon in Barcelona. "De jongens doen het geweldig. We zijn na Portugal samen naar de fabriek gegaan om ons voor te bereiden op de race in Spanje. Niemand wilde zijn rust pakken, maar allemaal doorknallen."

"Met meer ervaring ken ik de auto en het team beter. We zijn nu beter in het implementeren van wat ik zeg bij het afstellen van de auto."

Tweede stoeltje Mercedes

Wat betreft de suggestie dat zijn huidige vorm hem in de race zou kunnen brengen om Bottas bij Mercedes te vervangen, zei hij afgelopen weekend: "Ik wil me concentreren op mijn werk bij Alpine."

Wolff lijkt het erover eens te zijn dat Ocon bij het Franse team blijft de meest waarschijnlijke uitkomst voor 2022 is. "De situatie met Esteban is vreemd", zei hij. "Hij zat lange tijd in ons programma bij Mercedes, maar nu is hij coureur bij het Alpine-fabrieksteam. Dat is een feit."

"Ik denk dat hij het daar goed doet, hij ontwikkelt zich en boekt vooruitgang. Hij is bovendien ook Frans. Dus alle sterren kwamen voor hem samen. Ik denk dat hij allereerst zal beslissen hoe zijn carrière verder gaat voordat we onze mening en visie aan hem vertellen."

  Toto heeft mij teveel aandelen en is volgens mij van het halve veld een soort ´manager´ of aandeelhouder. Ik wist niet dat dat ocon. Die grijpt op een dag nog een keer de macht over de F1.

Vele willen iets anders horen denk ik, maar als Lewis nog blijft, dan zie ik toch echt Bottas ook bijtekenen voor 2022. Als dit zo door gaat pakt Mercedes weer de dubbel, eer dat Perez Max kan helpen dan zijn de prijzen al vergeven denk ik.

Ocon doe het niet slecht maar ook een beetje geluk dat Alonso niet meer zo scherp is als bijvoorbeeld rond 2010 anders was het wellicht na dit seizoen afgelopen met loopbaan van Ocon. Een beetje zelfde als Rosberg toen Schumacher na een lange pauze en meer met een hobby-gevoel dan echte motivatie(zoals in begin van een F1-loopbaan) zijn comeback maakte op oudere leeftijd.
Aan ene kant hoop ik dat Alonso zijn weg een beetje terug vindt en op zijn minst op 85% van zijn vroegere prestatieniveau zit wat goed genoeg moet zijn om het huidige niveau van Ocon makkelijk te evenaren. Aan de andere kant hoop ik dat Ocon er echt voor knokt zodat hij in F1 blijft. Echter, hij heeft niet zo veel excuses meer en, zoals vaak gezegd, de echte talenten moeten altijd boven water komen hoe diep je ze ook gegooid had. Sommige supertalenten zoals Leclerc of Verstappen doen het gelijk maar sommigen misschien een heel klein beetje minder(het scheelt echt een beetje) hebben wat tijd nodig om hun weg te vinden. Als Ocon ook zo'n Rosbergje kan doen dan alleen maar respect en anders helaas game over of ergens als 2e rijder.
