Fernando Alonso laat stuurbekrachtiging aanpassen door Alpine

Alpine-coureur Fernando Alonso heeft zijn engineers de opdracht gegeven om de afstellingen voor zijn stuurbekrachting aan te passen voor de Grand Prix van Monaco. De Spanjaard hoopt op die manier een volgende stap te zetten in het proces om gewend te raken aan de hedendaagse Formule 1-bolides. De tweevoudig wereldkampioen is na twee jaar afwezigheid terug in de koningsklasse van de autosport.

Dat gaat gepaard met de nodige aanpassingsproblemen. Alonso denkt die deels te kunnen verhelpen door de stuurbekrachting anders af te laten stellen. "Het heeft te maken met wat ik fijn vind. Deze auto is qua stuurbekrachting anders dan wat ik gewend was, dus ik wil het nu meer in lijn brengen met wat voor mij gewoon was. Dat zou mijn gevoel in de auto moeten verbeteren. Dit geldt alleen voor mijn kant van de garage, hopelijk maakt dit het makkelijker voor me."

Persoonlijk gaat het met Alonso nog met horten en stoten, als team begint Alpine zijn draai steeds beter te vinden. "Ik denk dat de auto heel snel zal zijn in Monaco", vervolgt de Spanjaard. "Ik heb een goed voorgevoel over onze performance daar. Een van de dingen die ik moet verbeteren is het optimaliseren van mijn tijden over één snelle ronde, de auto pushen en volledig vertrouwen op het materiaal. Op dat vlak ben ik op dit moment nog niet honderd procent."

De tweevoudig wereldkampioen was niet te spreken over de tactiek die Alpine afgelopen zondag in Spanje hanteerde. De Franse renstal probeerde een één-stopper met Alonso, wat niet werkte. "Deze strategie was je reinste zelfmoord. Op oud rubber met allemaal jongens op verse banden achter me was ik aangeschoten wild. In eerste instantie hield George Russell de meute nog voor me op, maar nadat hij door Jan en alleman werd ingehaald waren we rijp voor de slacht."

Pirelli had ook al uitgerekend dat een 2-stopper de beste strategie zou zijn. En dat is duidelijk aangetoond, door Alonso en ook door Max. Beiden waren de sitting duck op gare banden.

Ik wist wel dat er iets was waarom hij compleet weggereden wordt door Ocon en dan weten we nu wat daar de oorzaak van is geweest.

  Maximo, jij kleurt iets in wat helemaal niet zo gezegd wordt. Wat ik lees is dat Alonso aanpassingen in de stuurbekrachtingen vraagt zodat het beter bij zijn voorkeur past. Nergens zegt hij dat hij daarom nog niet presteert zoals verwacht.

  @johan_sb2 Eens. Dat is doorgaans ook wel een eigenschap van Alonso,, althans dat is mijn ervaring. Maar ik vind ook dat hij hier introspectief is en niets verkeerds zegt. Juist positief dat hij zo open is.
