Steiner strijkt meer met de hand over het hart voor onervaren line-up

Haas F1-teambaas Günther Steiner is een beetje uitgegroeid tot cultheld in de paddock, mede dankzij de Netflix-serie Drive to Survive. Daarin is te zien hoe de Italiaan bij vlagen pijnlijk eerlijk over zijn coureurs is en niet schroomt om hen, al dan niet verpakt in een grapje, de waarheid te vertellen. Dat kon bij routiniers als Romain Grosjean en Kevin Magnussen, maar nu met debutanten Mick Schumacher en Nikita Mazepin heeft hij zijn aanpak moeten veranderen.

Hij strijkt noodgedwongen meer met de hand over het hart voor zijn onervaren line-up. Steiner: "Ik pas me aan, ik ben rationeel. Ik besef dat onze huidige rijders nooit eerder Formule 1 hebben gereden. Ze nu onder druk zetten zou verkeerd zijn, aangezien je dan een verkeerde tegenreactie uitlokt. Ze moeten leren, ze moeten vertrouwen opdoen. Je moet ze eerst opbouwen voordat je ze onderuit kunt halen. Dat probeer ik te doen door hen vertrouwen te schenken zodat zij goed kunnen presteren. Wat er daarna gebeurt, zien we dan wel weer."

Het is een kwestie van leren en ervaring vergaren. De Formule 1 is vooral voor Mazepin tot nu toe een harde leerschool. De jonge Rus valt voorlopig vooral op door vaak van de baan te spinnen en rare acties waarmee hij andere rijders in de weg rijdt. Ook in de eerste vrije training in Spanje belandde hij weer in de grindbak.

"Nikita ging de baan op met de hardste compound en had moeite om de grip te vinden", zegt Steiner daarover. "Maar door de huidige bandenselectie waar we aan vast zitten, hebben we geen andere keus dan hem op dat moment met de hardste banden de baan op te sturen. Dat leggen we uit om onze rijders in te laten zien hoe alles werkt en wat we doen om het beste te maken van de situatie. Soms kunnen we onze coureurs niet veranderen, maar het belangrijkste is nu om ze op te bouwen zodat ze vertrouwen krijgen om in een later stadium goede prestaties te leveren."

Ik vind dat Schumacher goed reed de afgelopen 2 races. Kon vechten met een in mijn ogen een wat betere williams auto. Mazepin doet wat Kubica deed in Williams... gewoon veel te weinig.

Ik kan me voorstellen wat die tegenreactie zou zijn als een Russische miljardair het team sponsort.

  We zien bij Yuki wat voor geweldige fijne prestaties er komen als je teveel druk zet.
  Steiner heeft gewoon gelijk. Ze rijden stijf achteraan en dan zou je als een Marko gaan staan lopen schreeuwen of ze negeren als uit de auto stappen. Doe maar gewoon normaal, die jongens hebben het al lastig genoeg met die “jahreswagen” van ze.
  Natuurlijk ga je de grote geldschieter niet zinloos afblaffen maar evenmin ga je drammen tegen Mick.
  Haas heeft voor deze line up gekozen en Haas zal ze nu moeten steunen en beter maken. Volgens mij zegt Steiner hier echt helemaal niks geks.

  Natuurlijk heeft Steiner gelijk, maar het is verrassend omdat hij in het verleden heel anders tekeer ging.
  
  Yuki doet het toch voornamelijk zelf. In ieder geval heeft hij punten gescoord, ik moet nog zien of de andere rookies zover komen. Natuurlijk is de Haas ook wel minder dan de Alpha Tauri.

Hij streek bij zijn vorige rijdere ook jaren achtereen over zijn hart.
Mopperen kan Günther als de beste maar in Amerika zit de man die het uiteindelijk allemaal bepaald.

Ik vind dat die over Schumi helemaal niets te klagen heeft tot nu toe. Vond hem in de formule 2 niet met kop en schouders er bovenuit steken zoals onze vriend Stoffel dat destijds deed, maar tot dusver rijdt hij toch wel oerdegelijk. En ik durf zelfs te voorspellen dat die dit jaar in een gekke (evt. regen) race een verdwaald puntje gaat pakken.
