Alpine: "Alonso heeft het leiderschap in het team op zich genomen"

Volgens de CEO van Renault, Luca de Meo, vervult Fernando Alonso zijn leidersrol bij Alpine naar tevredenheid van het management. De Spanjaard won ruim 15 jaar geleden zijn twee titels bij hetzelfde Renault-fabrieksteam en keerde dit seizoen na een sabbatical van twee jaar terug naar de Formule 1.

Tegen Sky Italië zei de Meo: "Hij heeft de ambitie om het hele team te leiden. Aan het begin van het seizoen heb ik hem gevraagd deze leidersrol op zich te nemen, en ik denk dat hij het heel goed doet. Hij heeft veel ervaring maar ook een hoog niveau. Iedereen in de Formule 1 weet dat hij een pure coureur is en ook ambitieus, en dat maakt hem veeleisend."

Moeite met Ocon

Alonso heeft echter moeite om zich aan te passen aan de Alpine van 2021 en gaf na Barcelona toe dat hij zelfs met 100 procent van zijn huidige potentieel niet in staat is om zijn jongere teamgenoot Esteban Ocon volledig te evenaren.

Maar De Meo steunt hem om het team uit Enstone vooruit te helpen. "Ik zou blij zijn als we podiumplaatsen zouden halen. Maar wat me echt blij zou maken, is om een heel sterk team te zien dat vooruitgang boekt. Diep van binnen willen we ons voorbereiden op volgend seizoen, op zoek naar oplossingen waarmee we echt competitief kunnen zijn", zo sloot de Meo af.
