Franz Tost stelt voor om gedoe over 'track limit' te voorkomen

AlphaTauri-teambaas Franz Tost stelt voor om de voortslepende discussies over 'track limits' te voorkomen in de Formule 1 door het "gewoon te negeren".

Dit jaar is er al veel geklaagd over inconsistent handhaven van de regels. Wanneer een coureur het circuit eigenhandig breder probeert te maken dan het is kan er nogal eens tijdswinst worden gewonnen. De wedstrijdleiding deelt regelmatig straffen uit en neemt bijvoorbeeld snelle rondetijden af wanneer een coureur in de fout blijkt te zijn gegaan. Het leidt tot veel geklaag en discussies als de regels verschillend worden toegepast.

Sommigen stellen voor om harde baanlimieten in te stellen, zoals bijvoorbeeld door grindbakken weer terug te halen direct naast de baan. Anderen vinden dat er strikt moet worden gehandhaaft wanneer coureurs de lijnen overschrijden: hard straffen.

De AlphaTauri-baas zegt tegen het Duitse motorsportblad Auto, Motor und Sport dat er maar eens een einde aan het gedoe moet komen. "Negeer het gewoon".

Voordeel behalen is onacceptabel

Tost legt uit: "Als iemand voordeel behaalt door bijvoorbeeld in te halen door de baan te verlaten, dan is dat niet acceptabel. Anders zou ik stoppen met al dit soort straffen."

Tost vervolgt: "Het komt vaker voor dat iemand de baanlimiet overschrijdt maar daar gewoon tijd mee verliest en er niets mee wint. Dat irriteert het publiek dat voor de TV zit."

Tost vervolgt zijn betoog: "Ik heb vrienden die mij bellen en zeggen: stop eens met die track limits; geen mens die er nog iets van begrijpt!"

Tost noemt een voorbeeld waarbij Max Verstappen tijdens de kwalificatie van de Grand Prix van Portugal even de controle over zijn Red Bull verloor waardoor hij wijd ging.

Tost: "Hij verloor de auto bijna vanwege een stevige zijdelingse windvlaag. Belangrijker is dat hij vooral tijd verloor dan dat hij daar tijd won."

Tost legt daarom uit waarom hij vindt dat men de coureurs gewoon vrij gelaten moeten worden op de baan zonder constant de baanlimieten te benadrukken en te dreigen met straffen: "Er zijn weinig bochten waar een coureur tijd wint door er wijd doorheen te gaan", zo besluit de Oostenrijkste teambaas van het zusterteam van Red Bull Racing.
