Sebastian Vettel heeft veel woorden nodig voor de nazit: "Heeft manier van werken veranderd bij Aston Martin"

Sebastian Vettel vergt veel tijd van zijn team voor de nazit na elke Grand Prix. Dat zegt Aston Martin-teambaas Otmar Szafnaurer na Vettels tweede plaats tijdens de Grand Prix van Azerbeidzjan in Bakoe.

De grondige debriefs hebben de manier van analyseren veranderd bij Aston Martin, zegt teambaas Szafnauer. “Sebastian heeft de manier waarop wij dingen doen uitgebreid. Lance is een rookie, hij is nu bij ons voor een tijdje en er is een goede wisselwerking tussen Lance en Sebastian. Sebastian heeft veel meer ervaring en de manier waarop wij nu onze nabespreking doen is een beetje veranderd. En niet alleen Lancer, maar het hele team heeft dat nu omarmd.”

Vettel mocht naast Sergio Perez als tweede op het podium staan in Bakoe, daarmee scoorde hij het eerste podium ooit voor Aston Martin. Volgens Szafnauer was de vooruitgang die Vettel in Monaco en Bakoe liet zien dan ook een logisch gevolg van het feit dat Vettel zich steeds meer op zijn gemak voelt in de Aston Martin AMR21.

Meer op zijn gemak in de auto

Szafnauer: “Hij werd beter en beter (voor Monaco, red). Ik zou eigenlijk niet moeten zeggen beter en beter, maar meer en meer op zijn gemak in de auto. Ik denk dat het een vooruitgang is van kleine stapjes. Het is een logische gevolg dat kleine stapjes samen kunnen leiden tot een grote piek.

Eerder onthulde Red Bull-teambaas Christian Horner ook al soortgelijke ervaringen met Sebastian Vettel. Zulks vertelde Horner vorig jaar in gesprek met David Coulthard in de podcast F1 Unscripted with Heineken.

Man van de details

Horner: “De nabesprekingen met Sebastian duurden zo’n twee uur. Pas na een half uur was hij klaar met het bespreken van de formatie-ronde en het testen van zijn drinkbeker. De details die hij besprak aangaande elk stadium van de race, elk stadium van de banden, het was gewoon veel te veel informatie voor ons om te verwerken. Mark (Webber, red.) deed er vijftien minuten over om de hele race te bespreken.”

Voor Aston Martin is het vooral leeraam, zegt teambaas Szafnauer: “Wij leren ervan en Lance ook; zo brengen wij het team samen naar een hoger niveau.”
