Magnussen maakt IndyCar-debuut in Road America

Voormalig F1-coureur Kevin Magnussen maakt aankomend weekend zijn IndyCar-debuut op Road America. De Deen valt in voor Felix Rosenqvist bij Arrow McLaren SP . De Zweed heeft nog last van een blessure door zijn harde klapper in Detroit afgelopen zondag.

Rijden in de hoogste Amerikaanse autosportklasse stond al langer op het verlanglijstje van Magnussen. Mede door de invloed van zijn vader Jan Magnussen. "IndyCar, daar ben ik altijd wel geïnteresseerd in geweest", zei de 28-jarige coureur. "Mijn vader was IndyCar-coureur in de jaren negentig. Ik was vaak bij de races toen ik nog klein was ik dacht altijd dat het supervet zou zijn." Magnussen komt in Road America een oude bekende tegen, genaamd Romain Grosjean. Vanaf 2016 tot en met 2020 was hij de teamgenoot van de Fransman bij het F1-team van Haas.

In eerste instantie zou Oliver Askew invallen voor Rosenqvist. Echter, na de sleutelbeenbreuk van Rinus VeeKay gaatt Askew in de Ed Carpenter Racing-wagen van de Nederlander rijden. McLaren moest haastig op zoek naar een nieuwe vervanger. Dat de renstal uitkwam bij Magnussen, was dan ook geen verrassing. De Deen reed in 2014 voor het team in de Formule 1 en was vorig weekend op dezelfde locatie als de IndyCar. In Detroit was hij actief in de IMSA, dat is te vergelijken met World Endurance Championship. In dienst van Chip Ganassi Racing won Magnussen de wedstrijd.

Over de situatie rondom Rosenqvist kan McLaren weinig zeggen. "Ontwikkelingen over zijn herstel zullen we delen als we meer weten."

Ik heb altijd wel geloofd in de kwaliteiten van Magnussen eigenlijk. Was direct on par met Grossjean toen die echt nog heel snel was. (Dat van Grossjean is mijn mening)

Ik heb altijd wel geloofd in de kwaliteiten van Magnussen eigenlijk. Was direct on par met Grossjean toen die echt nog heel snel was. (Dat van Grossjean is mijn mening)

Had ik nou gisteren een primeur op de s.ite in een reactie op het veekay bericht? Hahaha ;)

Nee tof dat hij deze kans krijgt. Hopelijk krijgt hij van Ganassi in 2022 Johnson zijn stoeltje. Die nascarman heeft toch te veel moeite met rechter bochten. (Zijn meeste spins en uitglijders zijn toevallig echt op rechter bochten)

  Magnussen rijdt in 2022 al voor Peugeot in het WEC, betwijfel of dat te combineren valt met Indycar.... Die Johnson mogen ze er wat mij betreft per direct uitgooien.

Ik vind dit ook positief nieuws zowel voor Magnussen maar ook voor de F1. Zo zien "oud"-gedienden misschien dat er ook nog een toekomst na F1 is, waar ze veel plezier en successen kunnen beleven. En daarom misschien minder lang blijven "hangen" in de F1, in een achterhoede team. En dan komen misschien weer eerder stoeltjes vrij voor aankomend talent.
