Lewis Hamilton kan Valtteri Bottas niet bijhouden: "Zachte band al na half rondje versleten"

Mercedes meldt zich weer vooraan het F1-veld, tijdens de eerste vrijdag trainingen in de Grand Prix van Frankrijk op Paul Ricard.

Hamilton heeft zo zijn worstelingen, zo kon hij vrijdag Valtteri Bottas niet bijbenen en vond hij geen grip en balans in zijn W12. Dat is niet voor het eerst dit seizoen: ook in Bakoe en Monaco kon de Britse coureur de auto maar niet naar zijn zin afstellen.

Tweede achter Bottas

Tijdens de eerste training was Hamilton tweede achter Bottas, in de middag waren Bottas en Hamilton niet sneller dan Max Verstappen.

Lewis Hamilton: "Het is nog best een worsteling, maar dat is het denk ik voor iedereen. Ik weet niet of het door het asfalt of door de hogere bandenspanning komt. De banden zijn meer opgepompt dan ooit te voren. Het is lastig te zeggen, maar we gleden alle kanten op en iedereen heeft het lastig."

Hamilton geeft toe dat hij zoekt naar grip en balans in de Mercedes.

Hamilton: "Ik kijk naar alle opties. We hebben veel veranderingen doorgevoerd en zullen vanavond ook alles analyseren, met de hoop dat het morgen beter gaat. Dat weten we echter pas zodra we morgen weer terugkeren op de baan. De tijden zien er niet zo slecht uit, we zitten dicht bij de kop."

Verstappen snel in VT2

Hamilton kijkt er niet raar van op dat Max Verstappen hem te snel af was tijdens de tweede training. "Ze zijn al een tijdje het snelste, dus je kan er vergif op innemen dat zij ook dit weekend snel zijn."

De banden zijn het enige contact met het wegdek, en dus gaan de Pirelli-banden weer van doorslaggevend belang zijn. Hamilton heeft er geen goed woord voor over hoe de banden zich onder zijn auto gedragen: ze slijten te snel, bieden te weinig grip en het warme weer zit dan ook niet mee, vertelt hij.

Hamilton: "Ze voelden allemaal slecht aan, maar de hardste band geeft nog het minst slechte gevoel. De banden hebben het hier erg zwaar door de hoge temperaturen. Hoe zachter de band, hoe slechter het gevoel. Ik denk dan ook dat iedereen zoveel mogelijk de harde band wil gebruiken."

Het zijn ingewikkelde afwegingen, en Lewis is er nog niet over uit wat hij er mee moet.

"Ik ben er nog niet zeker van welke band het snelste is. De zachte band is halverwege de ronde al op en de medium-band heeft dan wel een betere levensduur, maar geeft weer minder grip."

Ligt het dan toch aan het chassis dat Bottas na Imola, en Hamilton nu, gekregen heeft?

  Voor nu zou dat best eens plausibel kunnen zijn. Al vind ik het een vreemd verhaal, want waarom zou je dat risico nemen als Mercedes zijnde. Zou je dan niet gewoon een nieuw chassis voor Bottas maken? Of is dat nu met het budget plafond en de tokens niet te doen…

  Mercedes wisselt standaard na de eerste paar races de chassis van de coureurs om geen al te groot verschil in gebruik te krijgen. Toto heeft vanmiddag gezegd dat als Lewis zich niet lekker voelt in dit chassis hij een nieuwe kan krijgen, want ze hebben een splinternieuw chassis bij zich.

  Elke rijder heeft zijn eigen rijstijl en de één vergt meer van een chassis dan de ander.
  Als je altijd voorop rijdt, heeft het chassis wellicht minder te lijden.
  Verschillende programma's tijdens de VT's.
  Zo zullen er meer zaken zijn, waardoor ze verschillend belast worden.
