Rosberg niet van mening dat Mercedes met zandzakken rijdt en meent dat team risico moet nemen

Traditioneel gezien is het Circuit Paul Ricard Mercedes-territorium. Sky Sports F1-commentator Karun Chandhok zei dat Mercedes net zo goed hun stempel op de voordeur kon zetten. Niet raar ook dat men dat vindt; in de afgelopen twee races dat hier gereden werd was Mercedes enorm dominant. Lewis Hamilton pakte daar twee keer pole en de zege.

Na twee weekenden uit vorm te zijn te zijn geweest leek het er gisteren ook op dat het team uit Brackley weer volle bak mee kon doen voor de pole en de overwinning. Valtteri Bottas zette het tempo in de eerste vrije training, en ook in de tweede vrije training zat hij er dicht op. Vandaag, echter, na de derde vrije training, is het Max Verstappen die het veld aanvoert qua tempo. En niet zomaar; Verstappen wist een gat van zo'n driekwart seconde te slaan naar Valterri Bottas op P2. 

Nico Rosberg is van mening dat het team waar hij in 2016 zijn kampioenschap mee pakte niet zomaar in staat om dit gat goed te maken. "Als Mercedes wil je je beslist niet in deze positie bevinden", zo liet de Duitser weten aan Sky Sports F1. "Zij zullen risico's moeten nemen om iets te kunnen forceren."

Rosberg vervolgde zijn verhaal met een behoorlijke statement. De ex Formule 1-coureur ziet zijn oude team dan ook niet in staat om  Red Bull Racing tegen te houden. "Zij zijn zo ver weg, maar laten we kijken of Mercedes iets magisch weet te vinden...", zo concludeerde Rosberg.

Om 15:00 begint de kwalificatie van de Grand Prix van Frankrijk. Kan Max Verstappen daar zijn vijfde pole positie van zijn carrière weten te pakken?

Perez zit zelfs nu nog niet in de top 5 al heel het weekend niet. Het wordt tijd dat mensen in gaan zien dat we hier te maken hebben met de beste/snelste rijder allertijden.

    Perez zit zelfs nu nog niet in de top 5 al heel het weekend niet. Het wordt tijd dat mensen in gaan zien dat we hier te maken hebben met de beste/snelste rijder allertijden.

      Ja Roy, in mijn ogen zeker de beste, maar schrik niet als Mercedes straks gewoon om de pole kan strijden. Dit spelletje hebben ze ook in Monaco en Baku gespeeld.

      Is zeker bemoedigend. Gaat er in de race om wie het best met re bandjes kan omgaan.
      Wie weet stelt Mercedes de wagen meer af op race-trim dan voor de kwalificatie om zo in de race een (banden) voordeel te hebben. De race duurt lang dus vanaf P3 vertrekken en beter op de banden kan de overwinning opleveren.
      Ze zijn bij Mercedes niet meer zo dominant als ze gewend waren, dus zullen ze een andere strategie toepassen.

      Aller tijden is het nog wat te vroeg voor om dat te zeggen. Maar van de huidige coureurs zeker wel (enkel mijn bescheiden mening).

    Ik denk van wel. Mercedes speelt spelletjes. Zowel in Monaco en Baku waren ze het ook zogenaamd helemaal kwijt om vervolgens in Q3 gewoon om de pole te strijden. Dan komen ze met de mededeling dat ze ergens in een vergeten laatje iets mysterieus gevonden hebben en zitten ze en in de kwalificatie weer bij.

      Dat denk ik niet, ik neem aan dat ze wel beter kunnen, maar bewust heel slecht presteren daar hebben ze alleen maar zelf last van.

      Geef mij 1 reden waarom dat ineens dit jaar mee begonnen zijn. En toen ze al die titels haalden dat niet deden. Ik zie er echt totaal geen logica in namelijk.

      Dat zou je denken ja, maar als ze straks gewoon om pole strijden, dan is dat 3 op rij.
      Een keertje kan, twee keer is al twijfelachtig, bij de derde keer lijkt het toch op spelletjes.
      Waarom? Proberen ze op die manier onder de huid van RB te kruipen? Ik weet het niet. Maar opvallend is het wel.
      We gaan het zien.

    Bij Mercedes dachten ze dat het lek hier na 2 mindere races wel weer boven te hebben, schiet die duivelse Max vanuit het niets ff een dikke torpedo hun dry dock in.
