Hamilton gaat niet bij de pakken neerzitten na verliezen pole GP Frankrijk en wil daarom druk uitoefenen op Verstappen

Max Verstappen pakte gisteren zijn vijfde pole position van zijn carrière na de Grand Prix van Frankrijk op het Circuit Paul Ricard. De Nederlander was daarmee bijna drie tienden sneller dan één na snelste man Lewis Hamilton. De Brit begreep niet - omdat hij vond dat hij zelf een erg goed rondje reed - hoe Verstappen nog zo ver voor hem kon staan.

Echter, ondanks het feit dat Mercedes had gehoopt dat het gat niet zó groot zou zijn, meent Lewis Hamilton niet dat hij bij de pakken neer gaat zitten. In plaats daarvan ziet hij dit als een mogelijkheid om zoveel mogelijk druk uit te voeren op de leider in het kampioenschap.

"Ik ben beslist niet nerveus voor de race", zo liet Hamilton weten in de FIA-persconferentie na de race gister. "Het was vrijdag niet goed, gisterochtend ook niet, maar tijdens de kwalificatie was het vele malen beter. Ik denk dat we zondag erg goed voor de dag kunnen komen."

"Over het algemeen was Red Bull net wat sneller in de lange runs, dus het zal moeilijk worden om ze te kunnen volgen", zo vertelt Hamilton verder. "Maar hopelijk zijn er mogelijkheden voor ons. Heel het weekend bevonden we ons wel in de top vier of top vijf. Dat was voor ons niet goed, maar het kan altijd erger", zo relativeert de zevenvoudig wereldkampioen uit Stevenage.

"We wisten heel goed dat de Red Bulls overal wel sterk konden zijn. Stratencircuits of niet - het maakt niet uit waar ze heen gaan, ze zijn overal sterk. Vandaag werd het onder mijn aandacht gebracht dat we voornamelijk tijd verloren op de rechte stukken, we moeten dus onderzoeken hoe dat komt. Desondanks is het niet verkeerd om tweede en derde te zijn hier."

"Het plaatst ons direct tussen beide Red Bull-wagens, dit brengt ons in staat om veel druk op ze uit te oefenen, maar alles zit nog steeds erg dicht op elkaar. Het zou zomaar kunnen dat ze nét dat ene stapje vooruit hebben kunnen zetten, misschien wel nog meer dan hoe wij in Barcelona iets sneller waren", zo concludeerde Hamilton tijdens de FIA-persconferentie direct na de kwalificatie.

Kansloze missie! De RBR is op dit moment de snelste wagen. Mijn verwachting is dat Max Hamilton op achterstand rijdt. Dit zag je al tijdens de vorige races. Max versnelde wanneer het nodig was en speelde zodoende met de concurrent. Ik verwacht daarom een 1-2 voor RBR.
