Zhou heeft genoten van zijn officiële F1-debuut

F2-coureur Guanyou Zhou heeft zijn officiële F1-debuut gemaakt tijdens de eerste vrije training van de Grand Prix van Oostenrijk. De Chinees en Alpine-protogé nam het stuurtje over van Fernando Alonso en heeft genoten van deze leerzame ervaring. Zhou werd veertiende en eindigde vier tienden achter Esteban Ocon, die ook voor het Franse team uitkomt.

"Het voelde erg speciaal om tijdens de eerste vrije training te rijden vandaag. Ik ben erg blij met al mijn stints en zette het rijden op de banden steeds meer naar eigen hand."

Zhou was verrast over zijn snelheid in de oefensessie. "Ik had niet verwacht om meteen snel te kunnen zijn. De snelheid was er zeker weten op de gele band. Het voelde goed vanochtend en kreeg meer zelfvertrouwen na iedere ronde. Ik wilde het geleidelijk opbouwen.

Na afloop was Zhou erg blij dat hij deze kans heeft gekregen. "Ik wil het team bedanken voor deze mogelijkheid. Hopelijk maak ik iedereen trots en er zullen later in mijn carrière meer van deze momenten komen."

Zhou is pas de tweede Chinese coureur die in een officiële F1-sessie in actie komt. Ma Qinghua was de allereerste. Dat deed hij in 2012 voor het team van HRT. Qinghua verving tijdens VT1 in Italië Narain Karthikeyan.

Zhou hoopt de eerste Chinees te worden die een fulltime zitje krijgt in de Formule 1. Om daarvoor in aanmerking te komen, moet de Alpine-coureur eerst zijn Superlicentie halen door bij de eerste negen te eindigen in het Formule 2-kampioenschap. De Chinees heeft 36 van de 40 benodigde licentiepunten. Op dit moment staat Zhou eerste in de tussenstand van de opstapklasse.

De Russische invloed op de F1 vind ik al erg genoeg (HAAS, Russische pay drivers met miljarden op hun bankrekening, Sochi/St. Petersburg, etc). Moet er dus niet aan denken dat het met die Chinezen ook die kant op gaat. Als die Chinees in de F1 zou komen omdat hij een supertalent is dan heb ik er geen moeite mee maar graag geen Chinese promotiestunt karavaan.

  Dus voorlopig hoef je er nog geen moeite mee te hebben @Nbs.

  Na de Verenigde Staten komt China op plek twee qua meeste miljardairs, de laatste periode groeit deze groep enorm en lijkt over een tijd de nummer 1 te gaan bestormen @Pierluigi
