Max Verstappen durft nog niet te dromen over wereldkampioenschap

Max Verstappen houdt vol dat hij nog steeds niet eens "droomt" over het worden van wereldkampioen in 2021.

De nieuwe dominantie van Red Bull in de Formule 1 is een belangrijk moment voor de sport, aangezien de Nederlandse coureur een voorsprong van 32 punten op Lewis Hamilton trekt met zijn pole, overwinning en snelste ronde in Oostenrijk op zondag. Het weekend daarvoor deed Verstappen hetzelfde.

Wisseling van de macht?

Teambaas Christian Horner begrijpt de betekenis van het moment.

Horner: "Zeven jaar lang heeft Mercedes niet alleen de Formule 1 gedomineerd, ze hebben het ook vernietigd", wordt hij geciteerd door Eleven Sports.

"Het kostte ons zeven seizoenen om weer op hun niveau te komen."

Hamilton stond zondag niet eens op het podium, maar Lewis Hamilton werd zondag verdedigd door Mercedes-teambaas Toto Wolff.

Wolff benadrukt dat de vloer van de auto van Hamilton beschadigd was tijdens de Oostenrijkse Grand Prix: "Lewis is niet de schuldige", beweert Wolff.

"Bij ons is alle hens aan dek. Ze hebben de afgelopen paar races veel upgrades gebracht en wij hebben er geen één gebracht."

Hamilton gaf eerder al aan dat hij de gang er vaak niet goed in kan krijgen bij de Mercedes W12. Hoewel Toto Wolff dat eerder ontkende, komt het team toch met upgrades naar de Grand Prix van Groot-Brittannië. Of dat het ei van Columbus gaat zijn, is afwachten. Hamilton verwacht niet dat nieuwe onderdelen aan zijn auto op Silverstone het gat naar Red Bull Racing kunnen dichten.

"Niet gaan lopen dromen"

Toch loopt de 23-jarige Verstappen niet op de zaken vooruit. "Wij moeten nu niet gaan dromen", zegt hij tegen De Telegraaf.

Verstappen zegt tegen de krant: "Ik weet zeker dat er nog races zullen zijn waarin Mercedes sneller is dan wij."

  zelfs de laatste 2 races waren ze niet dominant, Ja ze hadden een dominante rijder. Maar zolang RB geen simpele 1/2tjes pakt is er van dominantie geen sprake.

  Dat Perez geen tweede werd lag de laatste wedstrijd echt niet aan gebrek aan snelheid van die Red Bull maar aan de klungelige fouten van Perez , een betere tweede rijder bij Red Bull zorgde wel voor dubbelslag bij Red Bull , ben daar maar zeker van

Max staat er goed voor (en terecht). Maar Lewis nu al afschrijven is hoogmoed. Silverstone is historisch gezien een MB baantje, dus daar verwacht ik toch wel flinke tegenstand. Het zou me eigenlijk verbazen als Max daar ook de overhand heeft. Enfin, een jagende Lewis, en een strijdende Max is, wat mij betreft, altijd een genot om te aanschouwen. Ik hoop dat MCL en Ferrari ook elkaar flink opzoeken aldaar, dan wordt het een plezant weekeinde. Maar de kampioenschapsdromen mogen nog even geparkeerd worden
