Red Bull-teambaas heeft medelijden met Ricciardo: "Zielig om hem zo te zien"

Christian Horner vindt het zielig dat ex-Red Bull-coureur Daniel Ricciardo het moeilijk heeft sinds hij dit jaar bij McLaren is gaan rijden. Ricciardo bracht Horner en het Red Bull-team in shock toen hij eind 2018 bij hen vertrok om bij Renault te tekenen, met de bedoeling hun duidelijke nummer één coureur te zijn.

Maar na slechts één seizoen besloot de Australiër dat McLaren een betere gok was en bracht hij het hele 2020-seizoen door in de wetenschap dat zijn tweede jaar bij Renault zijn laatste zou zijn. Tot nu toe is de laatste overstap naar McLaren echter niet succesvol gebleken. Ricciardo is in de schaduw gezet door zijn snel verbeterende teamgenoot, Lando Norris. De jonge Brit heeft in 2021 al drie podiumplaatsen behaald in vergelijking met Ricciardo, die niet verder kwam dan de zesde plaats als beste eindresultaat.

In de Beyond The Grid-podcast werd Horner gevraagd hij dacht dat Ricciardo de verkeerde stap heeft gemaakt bij het verlaten van Red Bull. De teambaas zegt echter dat hij geen plezier heeft in het zien van de problemen van Ricciardo, die grote moeite heeft om zich aan te passen aan de McLaren MCL35M.

Vriend van het team

Horner heeft met Ricciardo gesproken, maar niet gevraagd of hij spijt heeft gehad van zijn beslissing om Red Bull te verlaten: "Niet echt. Toen hij aankondigde dat hij Renault zou verlaten, belde hij me vorig jaar tijdens de periode dat we onze fabrieken hadden gesloten. Ik herinner me dat hij zei: 'je denkt waarschijnlijk: dat had ik je toch gezegd, en ja dat deed je!' Maar dat was een beslissing die hij nodig vond op dat moment."

Medelijden hebben met mensen die vele tientallen miljoenen bij elkaar harken met hun uit de hand gelopen hobby is sowieso best wel vreemd.

Nou, ik heb totaal geen medelijden met Daniel, ik vind hem 'n grote lafbek omdat hij de strijd niet aandurfde met Max.....en laat dat "geweldig coureur" ook maar weg.....

  1e jaar Renault had hij het ook lastig. Laten we eerst volgend jaar maar afwachten voordat we hem helemaal af gaan schrijven. Maar vermoed dat hij zijn Ferrari droom wel kan vergeten.

  Het is jammer... maar idd of het zielig is ? Ricciardo had nooit voor het geld van Renault moeten gaan. Ik weet niet of hij bang was voor Max, maar hij vond een te gemakkelijke uitweg, en die heeft 'ie toen genomen.
  Heeft 'm 2 jaar carrière gekost, en intussen zijn de jonkies beter geworden.
  Denk niet dat Ricciardo er nog bovenop komt zoals Norris nu rijdt.

Typisch een rijder waarbij zijn wagen op hem afgestemd moet zijn. in 2016/2017 zag je echt wel dat als je de wagen naar zijn wens maakt hij heel snel is, Echter: Hij blijkt moeite te hebben om zich aan te passen als hij in een andere wagen komt. Daarom ook geen absolute top. Hij is echt wel gelijkwaardig aan Norris denk ik, Maar deze wagen ligt hem niet.

Mannen als Hamilton/Verstappen/Russell en misschien ook wel Lando passen zich denk ik heel snel aan mochten ze ineens in een andere wagen zitten.

als mensen medelijden met je krijgen dan sta je er niet best voor. Daar weet Seb alles van aangezien de hele f1 wereld medelijden met hem had afgelopen jaren
