Saoedi-Arabië ziet tweede race wel zitten in 2021

Saoedi-Arabië heeft zich opgeworpen als een potentiële alternatieve Grand Prix-locatie in het door covid in de war geschopte 2021-seizoen in de Formule 1.

De allereerste Jeddah-straatrace staat al gepland voor begin december, slechts veertien dagen nadat de opnieuw geplande en daarna geannuleerde Australische GP zou plaatsvinden.

Qatar en Bahrein hebben aangegeven dat ze zouden kunnen helpen, maar het kan logischer zijn dat de Formule 1 in plaats daarvan een dubbele race doet in Saoedi-Arabië.

"We hebben nog geen verzoek ontvangen van de Formule 1 om een tweede race te organiseren, maar we liggen perfect op schema met onze voorbereidingen", zo wordt prins Khalid Bin Sultan Al Faisal, een Saoedische koninklijke en provinciale gouverneur, geciteerd door het Belgische Sporza .

Sommigen zullen het niet toejuichen dat de F1 een tweede race in Saoedi-Arabië overweegt, omdat het koninkrijk ervan wordt beschuldigd de Formule 1 te gebruiken om mensenrechtenschendingen te 'schenden'.

Maar F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali wuift die zorgen weg.

"We geloven in het bezoeken van bepaalde landen die laten zien dat ze in de toekomst willen veranderen", vertelde hij aan het tijdschrift GQ.

"We willen ook niet betrokken zijn bij politiek. In plaats van te praten over de negatieve dingen, zouden we de positieve dingen moeten bespreken die de F1 kan laten gebeuren."

Ik zie race 1 al niet zitten. Ze konden net zo goed naar Pikes Peak voor dit geslalom.

  Daar gaat het ook niet om, ze betalen veel geld dus dan staan ze wel met stip op No.1 denk ik zomaar.
  
  Het tienjarige contract dat de Formule 1 met Saoedi-Arabië afgesloten heeft, vertegenwoordigt een totale waarde van 650 miljoen dollar. Dat blijkt uit een onderzoek van mensenrechtenorganisatie Grant Liberty. De cijfers komen er dus op neer dat Saoedi-Arabië de komende tien jaar 65 miljoen dollar per jaar voor een Grand Prix neertelt.

  John6... de F1 zou eens moeten eisen om met een geweldig circuit te komen in plaats van deze kleuterkrabbels. Met al het geld van de wereld dat ze daar hebben zouden ze een klaverblad aan kunnen leggen die geschikt is voor F1... up and down like a rollercoaster.

  @Tyla Zullen we eerst maar eens afwachten hoe de race gaat verlopen. Ik vind de lay-out juist wel wat hebben van Suzuka op de brug na dan.
  Het 'geslinger' zit ook in Suzuka en de meeste rijders vinden dat uitdagend omdat je geen foutje mag maken bij de eerste bocht omdat je dan in de daarop volgende bochten verkeerd zit, ronde naar de gallemiesen ;-)

  Ben ik ook met je eens, Saoedi-Arabië daar is geld ook nooit 1 probleem, ze zagen alleen maar $$$$, en tekende zo bij het kruisje.

"We geloven in het bezoeken van bepaalde landen die laten zien dat ze in de toekomst willen veranderen" Jaja, maar ik zie ze echt geen ja zeggen als, ik noem maar wat, de Soedan een baantje wil aanleggen voor een GP. Ook bij Saoedi-Arabië geldt dat het puur en alleen een kwestie van geld is.

Wat in dit artikel niet wordt vermeld, is dat Saudi Arabië waarschijnlijk de afsluitende Grand Prix gaat worden. Ivm de huidige regels, worden bezoekers van Abu Dhabi opgedragen eerst in quarantaine te gaan bij terugkomst in Engeland. En dat is zeer onwenselijk dat je pas na 10 dagen naar huis kan als je de laatste Grand Prix hebt verreden.
Vanuit Saudi Arabië geldt geen quarantaine plicht in Engeland. En vanuit Abu Dhabi naar Saudi Arabië, vergt ook geen quarantaine plicht.

Dus als Saudi Arabië de laatste Grand Prix wordt, dan is het zeker mogelijk om twee Grands Prix achter elkaar te houden om toch aan 22 of 23 races te komen, zonder teveel kopzorgen.
