Valtteri Bottas is dé coolste man in de vrijdagse hitte op de Hungaroring: "Leek wel Finse sauna"

Valtteri Bottas is er alles aan gelegen om sneller te zijn dan Lewis Hamilton, en vandaag lukte hem dat tijdens de vrije trainingen voor de Grand Prix van Hongarije op de Hungaroring nabij Boedapest.

De Finse coureur is nog altijd niet zeker van zijn plekje bij Mercedes voor 2022 en laat zich dan ook van zijn beste kant zien tijdens de vrije trainingen op vrijdag.

In de ochtend was Bottas al sneller dan Hamilton, maar hij kwam op de harde band slechts een paar honderdsten tekort op Max Verstappen die op de zachte band snel was tijdens de eerste vrije training.

Tijdens de tweede oefensessie op de Hungaroring is Bottas echter de beste van alle twintig de coureurs.

Terwijl de temperaturen van het asfalt opliepen tot boven de 63 graden Celsius, was de buitentemperatuur ook niet koud: de zon scheen de hele dag volop en kwik steeg tot zo'n dikke 32 graden Celsius. Een hete middag in de zwarte bolide en de zwarte overall, erkent de snelle Finse Mercedes-coureur.

Finse sauna

Bottas blijft echter koel, op z'n Fins. Na afloop verklaart hij dan ook: "Het voelde alsof ik in een Finse sauna zat. Als je stopt voel je de warmte helemaal omhoog slaan en dat voelt alsof het warmer is dan 60 graden. Op de baan krijg je tenminste nog een beetje meer lucht, maar het is wel wat lastiger met de banden die al snel te warm worden."

Bottas blijft koel en kalm

Bottas klaagde vorig jaar tijdens de Spaanse Grand Prix nog over zijn zwarte overall, toen het ook erg zweten was voor hem. Vandaag houdt hij zijn hoofd echter koel en rijdt hij indrukwekkende kwalificatie simulaties, terwijl Hamilton snel oogt op de langere runs.

Mercedes zet stappen vooruit

Bottas: "Ik denk niet dat het er al te slecht uit zag voor ons vergeleken met de anderen. Ik vind het geen slechte start voor ons vandaag. Wij hebben de laatste tijd stappen vooruit gemaakt. Terwijl het al warm was in de eerste training, en met de balans die wij toen hadden, had ik gedacht dat wij nog behoorlijk wat werk te verzetten zouden hebben. Wij hebben daar echter goed op gereageerd en het voelde oké. Maar er zit nog meer in het vat: het lijkt erop dat we morgen mee kunnen vechten om de pole."

Bottas kan doen wat hij wil, in de eerste bocht krijgt hij een telefoontje van Toto om gas te minderen tot queen Lewis er voorbij is.

  t is nog een heel stukkie naar bocht 1 vanaf de start. Als Max wat wil moet ie zorgen dat ie daar tussen de Mercedessen in kan komen (mocht dat in kwalificatie niet lukken).

  Bottas startte gewoon als 3e toen. over het algemeen zitten ze er altijd dicht op. het grootste gat wat ik me kan herrineren is 0.400 in Bahrein de eerste race.

Ik denk dat we het er met z'n allen wel over eens kunnen zijn dat Bottas nooit Dé coolste man is. Zelfs in een kamer vol vrouwen is er wel een vrouw te vinden die een coolere man is dan Valterri ;)
