Vader Sergio Perez leidt project voor tweede Mexicaanse GP in Cancun

Antonio Perez was afgelopen weekend in de F1-paddock en zijn bezoek was niet onopgemerkt gebleven. Volgens de Mexicaanse krant Reforma was hij er niet alleen om zijn zoon Sergio Perez te steunen en zien rijden.

In plaats daarvan leidde Perez senior een delegatie van Mexicaanse zakenlieden die FIA- en Formule 1-functionarissen ontmoetten om de mogelijkheid van een tweede Grand Prix in Mexico te bespreken.

Perez zegt hierover tegen de krant: "Het is een nieuw project en het is iets dat helemaal vanaf nul opgebouwd zal moeten worden. We gaan beginnen met intentieverklaringen te ondertekenen, maar het werd zeer goed ontvangen."

Volgens Reforma zou de tweede Formule 1-race van Mexico plaatsvinden in Cancun, een bekende toeristische kustbestemming. Het project heeft naar verluidt de steun van Mexicaanse overheid in diverse belangrijke departementen.

"Ik heb Jean Todt en Stefano Domenicali ontmoet", onthulde Perez senior. "Ze vertelden ons dat het tegen 2024 plaats zou kunnen vinden, wanneer we hopelijk Checo al als wereldkampioen hebben. De Mexicaanse economie heeft deze grote internationale projecten dringend nodig."

Verder levert een Afrikaanse GP niks op. Alsof iemand goed gaat investeren in een high tech circuit in Tanzania en alsof er vanaf dat moment duizenden mensen de economie komen spekken.

    Ik heb liever een GP in zuid afrika of een ander land in het continent Afrika.

    Meerdere redenen:
    1. Het is een WK
    2. Wil je meer diversiteit... ga na de diverse locaties.
    3. Ik ben van mening dat f1 een positief effect kan hebben op het dan gekozen afrikaanse land voor de economie. Ik zou t mooi vinden als F1 kan bereiken wat ze in Singapore hebben bereikt: namelijk het imago oppoetsen van tussenhaven naar touristenparadijs.

      Alleen Zuid Afrika heeft een circuit dus dat zou de enige optie zijn. Inmiddels is dat land totaal naar de knoppen aan het gaan en is een GP echt wel het laatste waar ze daar aan denken.
      Maar dat moet dan allemaal toch maar geregeld worden in het kader van diversiteit en inclusie?

      Rimmer. Niks moet. Ik zie het alleen liever dan een 2de race in hetzelfde land. Nigeria bijvoorbeeld. De slapende reus van Afrika waar maar niet het potentieel wordt benut dat men heeft.

      F1 is een geweldige marketingtool voor landen. Imago oppoetsen om grote investeerders en touristen binnen te halen. Er zijn genoeg GP's geweest met deze gedachtengang om een streek op te hemelen. Noord Korea, India, Abu Dhabi, Saudi Arabie, Vietnam (die het probeerd)...

      Ik zou het mooi vinden als elk continen betrokken is in een WK, maar dat is een ideologie inderdaad. Er zijn vooral in zuid afrika nu andere dingen belangrijker, maar voor de latere termijn... zou het leuk zijn om daar weer eens heen te gaan.

      In heel Afrika @Tyla.
      Nog maar 1,5% van dat continent is ingeënt en in het decadente westen hebben we het voornamelijk over een derde spuit voor ons zelf.
      Wat ook nog eens struisvogelpolitiek is maar dat nu ff terzijde.

      Daardoor kan er ook praktisch gezien daar in 2024 nog geen GP worden georganiseerd.

      Maar vanuit het ideale plaatje bekeken ben ik het met je eens en zou ik Zuid-Afrika graag terugzien keren op de F1-kalender.

      Als Afrika een Grand Prix krijgt, dan is natuurlijk Zuid Afrika het eerste land waar men naar kijkt. Echter wordt door @Tyla terecht Nigeria genoemd. Misschien wel een land wat structureel over het hoofd wordt gezien. Maar Nigeria krijgt as we speak de drie na grootste olieraffinaderij ter wereld, die volgend jaar operationeel wordt, een van de langste non stop spoorlijnen ter wereld en een van de grootste hydroelectrische dammen van het continent. De enige Afrikaanse landen met een hoger BBP per inwoner zijn Zuid Afrika en Egypte.
      Als er een (Chinese) investeerder komt, ongeacht wat ze investeren, dan is de kans op dit moment groter dat men voor Nigeria kiest dan voor Zuid Afrika.

      Overigens, laat zo'n investeerder maar een mooi circuit uit de grond stampen rondom Abuja, de feitelijke hoofdstad van het land. Prachtige regio, mooie natuur en op de achtergrond Zuma Rock. Ik ben voor.

    Daar in Cancun en omgeving is al een overdaad aan toerisme, ze kunnen beter de restanten van de eens zo florerende cultuur voor de toekomst veilig stellen.
    Het is daar wat dat betreft gigantisch mooi en indrukwekkend!
