Helmut Marko: "Alexander Albon de beste in onze simulator"

Alexander Albon is de beste in de simulator van Red Bull Racing. Dat zegt dr Helmut Marko tegen Speed Week.

De Thaise coureur werd eind vorig jaar te licht bevonden als teamgenoot van Max Verstappen. Het team koos voor de door Racing Point door Sebastian Vettel vervangen Mexicaan Sergio Perez. Perez wist de Grand Prix van Bakoe dit jaar te winnen nadat Max Verstappen er uitviel als gevolg van een klapband van Pirelli.

Alexander Albon doet nu veel ontwikkelingswerk in de simulator en is van groot belang voor de vooruitgang die het team van Max Verstappen wist te boeken, stelt Marko nu. Ondertussen doen geruchten de ronde dat Albon grote kans zou maken op een stoeltje bij Williams voor 2022.

Er is een nieuwe mededinger naar voren gekomen voor de potentiële vacatures bij Williams en Alfa Romeo voor 2022. Albon is momenteel reservecoureur voor Red Bull Racing. Ook rijdt hij in de DTM met steun van Red Bull.

Zelfs sluit Albon niet uit dat hij terugkeert achter het stuur van een echte Formule 1-bolide. Albon zegt daarover: "De tijd voor gesprekken begint nu", zo citeert Speed Week de in Engeland geboren Thaise coureur.

Indycar of Formule E

"Maar in mijn situatie moet je altijd open staan voor andere opties zoals Indycar of Formule E. Als er een kans is om in de Red Bull-familie te blijven, zal ik die zeker grijpen." Volgens Helmut Marko is Albon voor Red Bull echter een belangrijk onderdeel van het Formule 1-team.

Albon van belang in de simulator

"Hij is onze beste in de simulator", zo stelt Dr. Helmut Marko. "Zijn bijdrage aan de ontwikkeling is enorm belangrijk voor het team. Wij zullen zijn toekomst niet verpesten, maar we willen hem bij ons houden."

Toch zijn er kansen voor Albon bij Williams en Alfa Romeo. Marko zegt dus dat Albon belangrijk is voor de ontwikkeling van de bolide van Max Verstappen en Sergio Perez, maar hij ontkent niet dat Red Bull zou kunnen helpen om die kansen verder te ontdekken. "Dat zou afhangen van de details van de contracten", zei Marko.

Ik denk dat FE logischer is dan Indy. Bij Indycar heb ik het idee dat Albon er wel eens bang kan worden qua hoe agressief ze racen. In FE lijkt agressief rijden tegen je te werken. Albon met zijn nette stijl vind ik wel wat verglijkbaar met Vandoorne, en niet met een Herta.

Kan me niet voorstellen dat Albon betere tijden neerzet in de simulator als Max. Maar als Marko het zegt

  De uren die Albon in de sim kan steken heeft Max noet beschikbaar. Daar zal het verschil in zitten denk ik.
  
  Maar over 1 ronde zal Max ook in de sim wel sneller zijn ja.

  Ik denk dat hij meer bedoelt dat het de beste sim coureur is die ze hebben, die niet ook in de F1 rijdt.

  Albon rijdt gedurende een paar dagen voor een GP weekend in de sim om een zo goed mogelijke afstelling te vinden.
  Op vrijdag na de VT's krijgt hij nieuwe afstellingen door om daar vervolgens mee te rijden en zijn bevindingen 's avonds door te geven.
