Kubica staat te popelen voor zijn eerste 24 uur van Le Mans: “Alles is anders”

Dit weekend is de beurt aan de laatste Triple Crown-parel van het seizoen: de 24 uur van Le Mans. Voormalig Formule 1-coureur, en huidig derde man bij Alfa Romeo, Robert Kubica staat voor het eerst aan de start van de raceklassieker.

De Poolse coureur zal een LMP2-bolide besturen voor Team WRT, de wagen deelt hij met de Zwitser Louis Delétraz en de Chinees Ye Yifei. In gesprek met MotorsportWeek.com gaat Kubica in op het verschil met de Formule 1: "Alles is anders. Het is alsof je een sprinter vergelijkt met een marathonloper." De Pool gaat nog even door met zijn metafoor: "Ze zien er niet eens hetzelfde uit omdat je als sprinter een compleet andere bouw nodig hebt dan voor de marathon."

De coureur beleefde zijn meeste successen in de Formule 1 bij de teams van BMW Sauber en Renault en gaat nu dus ook voor succes op Le Mans. Maar een succesje boeken in de langeafstandsrace is toch wat anders volgens Kubica: "In de kern is het dezelfde sport, maar de benadering is anders. Waarschijnlijk is de overeenkomst dat je het maximale uit het materiaal probeert te halen. Maar het is endurance racen, dus moet je je risico's minimaliseren."

Kubica zal veel tegenstand krijgen van een hele hoop bekende koppen. In dezelfde klasse als Kubica vinden we onder anderen Kevin Magnussen terug. De Deen, die vorig jaar nog voor Haas reed in de Formule 1, deelt een auto met zijn vader. Ook good old Juan Pablo Montoya staat aan de start en ook Stoffel Vandoorne maakt zijn opwachting. Daarnaast zal een heel blik Nederlanders het gevecht aan gaan met onder anderen Kubica. Om 16:00 zondagmiddag weten we hoe Kubica's marathon is verlopen, het is niet bekend wanneer Kubica weer mag sprinten in vrijdagtrainingen in de Formule 1.
