Ecclestone denkt dat Verstappen de grootste kans op de titel heeft

Het is een waar koningsduel: de strijd tussen Max Verstappen en Lewis Hamilton. Inmiddels zijn we halverwege het seizoen en beginnen steeds meer kenners en fans hun voorspellingen te doen wie van de twee wereldkampioen gaat worden.

Aan het rijtje meestervoorspellers kunnen we nu een nieuwe naam toevoegen, die van Bernie Ecclestone. De voormalig heerser van de Formule 1 laat zich in gesprek met Auto Motor und Sport uit over de strijd: "Ik zou mijn geld inzetten op Max. Hij is goed bezig en het lijkt dat hij de beste auto heeft op dit moment."

Ecclestone gaat nog dieper in op de materie: "Max zal races winnen die Lewis niet kan winnen en andersom. Op het einde komt het erop neer dat het beslist zal worden door wie de minste fouten maakt. Lewis heeft meer ervaring. Hij kent deze situatie. Het grootste risico voor Max is dat hij meer foutjes kan maken." Vooralsnog hebben we dit seizoen toch wat foutjes gezien in het Hamilton-kamp. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan zijn slipper in Imola en natuurlijk het welbekende Silverstone-incident.

Ook Ecclestone kijkt nog even terug op de gebeurtenissen op de historische gronden van Silverstone. "Als Lewis vooraan had gereden was het lastig geworden voor Max. De Mercedes was sneller op het rechte stuk. Max had moeten vertrouwen op de strategie en zijn pitcrew. Maar je kan geen snellere pitstop plannen." Vooralsnog is het een prachtig duel en in België zal er een nieuw hoofdstuk worden geschreven in het boek 'Hamilton v. Verstappen'.

Ik wacht liever eerst een paar races of om te bezien hoe de snelheidsverhoudingen tussen beide auto's nu echt zijn. Door al dat gedonder de afgelopen paar races hebben we geen Max meer kunnen beoordelen op volwaardige racesnelheid in de RB16B.

Die zogenaamde fout op Silverstone zal Hamilton nog wel het minste mee zitten.. Beter had die niet voor hem af kunnen lopen, dat soort fouten zou hij elke race wel willen maken.. Net zoals de fout van teamgenoot Bottas in Hongarije..

Maar even serieus, als de verhoudingen blijven zoals ze waren voor de zomerstop dan heeft Max inderdaad de meeste kans.. Maar dan moet hij dus niet dezelfde pech blijven houden met klapbanden en anderen die hem eraf rijden.. Met zulke pech kan je de rest van de wedstrijden winnen maar wordt je nog geen kampioen..

  klopt, de kunst zal zijn om uit de problemen weg te blijven en constant presteren dan zie ik hem iid wk worden in de beste auto. Zoals Bernie dit ook min of meer aangeeft.
