Red Bull bekijkt alle opties voor Albon, ook terugkeer in F1

Vrijdag werd bekend dat Sergio Perez ook in 2022 voor Red Bull zal rijden. Voor Alexander Albon betekent dit dat hij in 2022 weer langs de Red Bull-zijlijn moet staan.

Teambaas Christian Horner sprak tegenover de verzamelde media over de toekomst van Albon: "We kijken naar de situatie, zijn er opties in de Formule 1? Maar als hij geen racezitje kan vinden zal hij dezelfde rol voor ons vervullen als hij dit jaar doet." De Thai is dit jaar test en reservecoureur voor het team en daarnaast racet hij ook in de DTM.

Albon flirtte eerder al met een mogelijke overstap naar de Indycars maar dat betekent niet dat zijn Red Bull-teambaas ontevreden met hem is. Horner: "Alex is nog steeds een belangrijk onderdeel van het team. Hij heeft een sleutelrol vervuld dit jaar en hij gaat verder met die rol."

Maar het kan natuurlijk ook nog dat Albon in een niet-Red Bull auto in de Formule 1 zal rijden. Horner spreekt zich ook hierover uit: "Je weet het nooit, hij is een capabele jongen en een snelle coureur." In de DTM gaat het vooralsnog goed met Albon en Horner is daar zeer content mee: "Hij doet het top in de DTM, hij won daar zijn eerste race afgelopen weekend en is een belangrijk onderdeel van het team."

In de autosport zelf kijkt men doorgaans toch net even iets anders en met nogal wat meer kennis van zaken dan een zichzelf benoemde kenner dat doet.
