Max Verstappen vijfde in de duinen van Zandvoort: "Kwalificatiesnelheid moet beter"

Max Verstappen heeft de vijfde snelste tijd gereden tijdens de tweede vrije training in de Grand Prix van Nederland op Zandvoort. Charles Leclerc was de snelste man met een 1:10.902. Carlos Sainz reed de tweede snelste tijd in een 1:11.056. Ook Esteban Ocon en Valtteri Bottas waren sneller dan Verstappen. Verstappen kwam tot een 1:11.264.

Lewis Hamilton viel uit met motorproblemen, terwijl hij vanochtend nog de snelste tijd noteerde tijdens de eerst vrije training. De tweede training werd ook tijdelijk stil gelegd nadat Nikita Mazepin in de grindbak belandde.

"Dit is belachelijk, ik kan zo geen normale rondetijd neerzetten", zei Verstappen tegen zijn team via de boordradiio nadat de Rus in de fout was gegaan.

Nadat de sessie weer werd hervat concentreerden de meeste teams zich op het rijden van langere stints.

Verstappen blikt terug op zijn vrijdag in gesprek met zijn eigen website Verstappen.com. “Het was echt mooi om alle fans in het oranje te zien en ze plezier te zien hebben op de tribunes. En de baan beviel mij ook. Het is best een korte ronde met veel snelle bochten, dus het was echt een leuke dag.”

“Ik denk niet dat het vandaag vanuit onze kant heel representatief was in de korte runs, want al na één ronde verliezen de banden een beetje prestatie en mijn snelste ronde reed ik op een gebruikte set banden. Mijn snelle ronde die ik moest afbreken was goed genoeg voor de eerste plek, dus dan hadden we er al wat anders over gepraat.”

"Desondanks zullen we aan een paar zaken gaan werken waar we niet helemaal blij mee waren in de korte runs. In de long-runs lijken we competitief, wat natuurlijk altijd belangrijk is, maar we weten ook dat de startpositie hier van levensbelang is. We moeten nog een paar zaken beter begrijpen, om wat meer snelheid te vinden voor de kwalificatie”, besluit Verstappen op zijn website.

Komt wel goed, ik heb vooral genoten van de sfeer en van een paar snelle rondes. Morgen ook nog even een training kijken, En daarna gaan we voor de knikkers. Iemand een idee wat er met die taximotor van Lewis aan de hand was?

  Sfeer leek mij prima, had het idee dat men het naar zijn zin had daar. Zag er wel erg druk uit, overigens. Kun je nagaan als het 100% bezet zou zijn geweest.
  Geloof dat ook de coureurs het allemaal mooi vonden, aan hun reacties te horen. Volgens mij geen enkele narigheid geweest, mooi zo!

Ik plaats het nog even:
Ik zie de steentjes in de grondbakken eventueel een probleem worden. Bij Sky hadden ze erover dat die steentjes niet scherp zijn, maar wel het formaat. Er zal er maar één aan je band plakken en poef pfffff... of opspringen ala Massa?

  Je bedoelt bij Audi S?
  Opspringen is denk ik niet het issue. De snelheid is daar relatief laag.
  Maar er lag wel veel grind op de baan daar, viel mij ook op. Velen rijden daar met de linker wielen voor de helft op het grind en werpen daarmee dat grind op de baan.

  Dat zou dan echt een afgang van Pirelli zijn , vroeger gingen sommige auto's hele stukken door de grindbakken om vervolgens na n halve ronde de rotzooi eraf te slingeren hun weg te vervolgen .

  Tot enkele jaren terug lag er altijd een bak grind op de baan als er weer eens iemand vanaf was gevlogen of te ver binnendoor had afgestoken.
  Nog nooit heeft iemand daar een lekke band of een steen door zijn vizier tegen zijn hoofd gekregen.
  Hooguit de radiatoren volgeschept maar zelfs die heb ik nooit lek gezien.
  
  Het is pas iets van de laatste jaren dat de grindbakken zijn vervangen door asfaltstroken.
  Maar dat had niets met het grond op zich te maken.
  
  Dit is trouwens de enige baan zonder tracklimits dus met een beetje mazzel is Zandvoort daarmee trendsetter en worden wereldwijd de uitloopstroken weer snel vervangen door losgestort grind.

Het oude (officieuze want niet tijdens een officiële race gereden) ronde record stond op 1:19,511

Het was hier ook weer verschrikkelijk met al die oranje hooligans,denk dat het nog erger was dan in Oostenrijk en Belgie.
