Räikkönen in het verleden dichtbij Red Bull-stoeltje: "We hadden gespreken met Kimi"

Vorige week maakte Kimi Räikkönen bekend dat hij na dit seizoen stopt met de Formule 1. De Finse Alfa Romeo-coureur loopt al sinds 2001 mee in de internationale racewereld en reed in zijn Formule 1-jaren maar voor 4 teams, Alfa Romeo en Sauber zijn immers hetzelfde team met een andere naam.

Het hadden zomaar meer teams kunnen zijn. De Fin was in zijn jaren bij McLaren, Ferrari en Lotus veelvuldig voorin het veld te vinden. Toen hij terugkeerde in de sport in 2012 , na een aantal jaren rally rijden, was hij verrassend snel in de Lotus. Zijn prestaties trokken de aandacht. Volgens Red Bull-teambaas Christian Horner zijn er gesprekken tussen de twee kampen geweest. Horner spreekt zich daarover uit tegenover internationale media: "We hebben wat gesprekken met Kimi gehad toen we moesten kiezen wie Mark Webber ging vervangen."

Webber ging eind 2013 met Formule 1-pensioen dus het is aannemelijk dat er rond die tijd gesprekken zijn geweest tussen Red Bull en Räikkönen. Maar de gesprekken kwamen op niets uit. Horner daarover: "Na zijn comeback uit zijn sabbatical. Hij had duidelijk wat banden met Red Bull tijdens zijn rally-periode en ook uit het begin van zijn carrière. We hebben wat gesprekken gehad maar er kwam niet echt iets uit."

Uiteindelijk werd Webber opgevolgd door Daniel Ricciardo en wat daar uitkwam is inmiddels bekend. Räikkönen zelf vertrok naar Ferrari en had daar in 2014 een matig seizoen. Hij bleef bij de Italiaanse renstal rijden tot 2018 waarna hij naar Alfa Romeo vertrok.

Hoe jammer dat hij nooit bij RB gekomen is! al vind ik het wel goed dat hij iig wereldkampioen is geworden , een illuster figuur die altijd een glimlach op mijn gezicht toverde! ik kan gerust stellen dat ik slechts weinig individuele coureurs graag zag en Kimi was er 1 van! het is mooi geweest en ik hoop dat hij er van gaat genieten! ik heb van mij Italiaanse vrienden begrepen dat ze de laatste race op hem zullen stemmen als Man of the Match en in navolging daarvan zal ik het eenmalig ook doen.
dit is feitelijk in strijdt met mijn opvatting dat de M.O.T.M naar de beste rijder van dat moment moet gaan, het zei zo

  Helemaal eens, ik vond het jammer dat McLaren hem net niet een auto kon geven waarmee hij kampioen kon worden en was ook erg blij dat hij kampioen werd met Ferrari. En ook ik zal tijdens de laatste race stemmen op Kimi voor Driver of the Day. Krijgen we nog een keer een gortdroge "Thank you everyone" van hem over de radio :) We gaan hem toch wel een beetje missen.

  Eigenlijk is het gezien zijn talent vreemd dat hij maar een keer kampioen is geworden. Nog vreemder is, dat hij voornamelijk kampioen werd door de interne situatie bij McLaren.

  2003 ff terug kijken dan
  Betrouwbaarheid was mssn niet optimaal, maar de McLaren was zeker kampioenschaps materiaal.

Jammer dat het niet door is gegaan, dan had Kimi samen met Seb in één team gezeten. Dat had ik wel eens willen zien...
