Geeft Grand Prix in eigen land extra druk? Max Verstappen: "Voor mij is het juist leuker"

Max Verstappen zegt dat de thuisrace op Zandvoort juist leuker was en hij had niet zozeer last van extra druk. Dat vertelt de Limburger in gesprek met zijn eigen website Verstappen.com. Terwijl er dagelijks zo'n 70.000 fans speciaal voor hem naar het circuit kwamen, zou je denken dat de druk immens is voor Verstappen. De Limburger vertelt dat hij er juist van geniet.

De Red Bull Racing-coureur vertelt: “Er wordt altijd gedacht dat er bij hun thuis Grand Prix meer druk is voor coureurs, maar voor mij is het juist leuker. In de auto denk je er niet aan dat je moet presteren, want je moet in de Formule 1 altijd presteren, dus dat is niet anders. Van mijn kant verandert het niet echt iets qua druk bij een thuisrace. Natuurlijk verwacht iedereen veel van je bij een thuisrace, dus het is leuk om te kunnen presteren en vooral om te winnen voor de koninklijke familie. Maar het was een geweldige prestatie van het hele Red Bull-team. Strategisch waren we erg scherp, maar ik ben me ervan bewust dat niet elk weekend zal zijn zoals Zandvoort, dus we moeten blijven werken als een team en blijven pushen, want er zijn nog veel races te gaan.”

Natuurlijk werden er extra foto's gemaakt in de pitstraat na afloop van zijn overwinning in de Noord-Hollandse duinen, maar uitgebreide feestjes vieren deed de Limburger niet. Daar is geen tijd voor, vertelt hij. Feesten kan altijd later nog, blijkt uit de woorden van Verstappen: "Ik had niet meer kunnen wensen in Zandvoort, maar nu zijn alle ogen op Monza gericht. De Italiaanse Grand Prix staat voor de deur en het is erg spannend in het kampioenschap, dus feestjes kunnen wachten en wat rust tussen de raceweekenden zal belangrijk zijn.”

Lewis Hamilton heeft slechts drie WK-punten minder dan Max Verstappen in het rijderskampioenschap. Toch heeft Mercedes als team een hoger puntenaantal dan Red Bull Racing heeft weten te scoren, voorafgaand aan de Italiaanse Grand Prix op Monza dit weekend.

Koele kikker, met focus op de race en weinig aandacht op PR acties. Deed hij beter dan Ricciardo een paar jaar geleden in Melbourne. Die was drukker met het feit dat het zijn thuisrace was, dan met de race zelf. Dat helpt niet als je een race te rijden hebt.

  Nee, dat denk ik niet. Alle 70.000 fans waren daar puur en alleen voor Max Verstappen. Er was niemand fan van een ander team of van een andere coureur.

Dat was te verwachten/hopen met zoveel "thuis" races, Spa (geboren), Oostenrijk (team eigenaar), Monaco (woonplaats), Engeland (fabriek) , Nederland (Nationaliteit) en normalite Japan (motor leverancier). En zowat elke andere GP is er een speciale oranje tribune. Als dat hem van slag had gebracht was dat een slecht teken geweest.

Als ik naar die foto bij het artikel kijk moet ik meteen denken aan die bofkonten die lekker in de schaduw zitten! :-)

Oostenrijk 2019 was het echt bloedje heet (ongeveer 40 graden) en al die toeschouwers zaten in de volle zon, sommige liepen zelfs weg van de race om af en toe ff wat schaduw te kunnen pakken. Wat was ik blij dat wij op de Nord tribune zaten met overdekking! Tot ongeveer 15 minuten voor het einde van de race zaten we lekker in de schaduw.

Wat ik gisteren postte klopt dus aardig...

“Als het [alle fans van Max die tekeergaan] al invloed op Max heeft dan zal hij de steun als positief ervaren, maar ik vermoed dat hij voldoende heeft aan zijn intrinsieke motivatie.

En eenmaal op de baan heeft Verstappen er m.i. min of meer maling aan of er 100 of 100.000 man publiek de race volgt.”
