Wolff over komst Russell: "Moet perspectief van andere ook respecteren"

In 2022 heeft Mercedes een volledig Britse line-up, naast Lewis Hamilton zag namelijk ook George Russell achter het stuur kruipen. Teambaas Toto Wolff weet dat hem een moeilijk klus voor de boeg ligt, hij wil immers geen herhaling van de vete tussen Hamilton en Nico Rosberg.

In gesprek met de site van de Formule 1 gaat Wolff in op hoe hij de komst van Russell gaat aanpakken: "Er is veel meer druk, hij krijgt een ongelooflijke teamgenoot met de grootste records en dan is het belangrijk dat je je aan hem conditioneert en je je zelf ijkt aan hem. We hebben situaties gezien in het verleden waar ze faalden. Lewis was onderdeel van zo'n eentje waar het team niet echt begreep hoe het potentieel kon aflopen."

Wolff verwacht niet dat Russell de waterdrager van Hamilton gaat worden. Wel vraagt hij om een bepaalde manier van waardering: "Ik denk dat je het perspectief en de ambitie van de andere jongen ook moet respecteren. We zetten geen coureur in de auto die niet de ambitie heeft om er alles aan te doen zijn teammaat te verslaan, races te winnen en voor het kampioenschap te gaan. Laat dat duidelijk zijn."

    Als Lewis zijn achtste pakt, zie ik hem al evengoed als mentor voor Russell dienen. Ik kan mij niet voorstellen dat hij zich nog maar eens kan opladen om nog meer titels te pakken. Doet hij dat toch, vind ik het prima en zelfs onwaarschijnlijk.

      Lewis gaat volgend jaar sowieso een moeilijke tijd tegemoet. Want ik heb een nieuwigheid (ja, je leest het hier als eerst) achter de schermen is er namelijk nóg een deal beklonken; Angela, de personal assistant van Lewis, zal na jaren trouwe dienst vanaf volgend jaar in opdracht van de nieuwe 1e rijder George Russel werken. Zelfs Lewis zelf is hiervan nog niet op de hoogte.

      Pete. Je moet er wel bij vertellen dat Russell heeft aangegeven lange rasta’s te laten groeien en derhalve een probleem met elastiekjes heeft als de helm afgaat. Lewis daarentegen gaat zijn kop milimeteren en heeft dus geen elastiekjes meer nodig.
      Wel blijft het probleem van de waterflesjes bestaan maar Angela heeft beloofd ze voor beide te zullen dragen.
      Het is dus zeker niet zo dat Lewis hier niet van wist of genaaid werd. Dit is onderling goed doorgesproken en tekenend voor de warme relatie die beide nu al met elkaar ontwikkelen. Een relatie waar Angela als een bezorgde moeder haar rol vervult.

      ja dat zal allemaal wel @Rimmer,
      maar wie krijgt zijn waterflesje als eerste? Dat is waar het om gaat, als George als eerste een lekker koel flesje in zijn knuistjes krijgt, en vervolgens Angela de inhoud van haar neus ophaalt en middels een vette rochel in het volgende flesje deponeert en dat aan Lewis geeft, dan hoef ik jou niet uit te leggen wie de eerste rijder is. en Zodra Lewis zijn rug keert de bandjes van de step lek..
      Nee, de relatie tussen de coureurs is al fragiel, en Angela gaat er alles aan doen om de boel op het spits te drijven, mark my words!

      Als Lewis zijn 8e pakt kan hij het zich veroorloven om een soort mentor te worden. Maar als hij dit jaar verslagen wordt gaat hij het volgende seizoen 100 % voor eigen win.

    Toto gaat gewoon de makkelijke weg kiezen en vanaf race 1 proberen Hamilton voor te trekken.
    Russel zal op zijn beurt aangeven dat Hamilton dan eerst maar sneller moet zijn.

    Een mens is nou eenmaal een gewoontedier;)
