Max Verstappen wordt warm noch koud van kakofonie aan meningen en kritiek

Het zal Max Verstappen worst wezen wat jan en alleman allemaal over hem denkt te moeten menen in de media. De Limburger concentreert zich vooral op zichzelf en zijn taak, vertelt hij aan de vooravond van het vijftiende hoofdstuk in de titelstrijd van 2021. Dit weekend rijden de snelste mannen ter wereld door de straten van Sotsji, Rusland.

Verstappen start het weekend met een puntentotaal van 226,5. Lewis Hamilton hijgt hem in de nek, de Brit scoorde in de voorgaande veertien race-weekenden slechts vijf punten minder.

Sinds Monza gaat Max Verstappen weer veelvuldig over de tong. Nadat voor de tweede keer dit seizoen een wiel-aan-wiel gevecht tussen Verstappen en Hamilton verkeerd afliep, klonk er de afgelopen weken stevige kritiek op het handelen van Verstappen in Monza. De Limburger werd door de internationale autosportfederatie hoofdzakelijk schuldig bevonden aan de crash met Hamilton op Monza. Nadat Hamilton en Verstappen beiden nul punten scoorden na hun aanvaring, stelde Jackie Stewart bijvoorbeeld dat de Red Bull Racing-coureur nog veel moet leren.

Verstappen ligt er niet van wakker, zo blijkt uit zijn reactie op vragen van de aanwezige media tijdens de donderdagse persconferenties in aanloop naar de Russische Grand Prix.

"Dat maakt niet zoveel uit. Ik doe gewoon mijn ding en het leven gaat gewoon verder. Ik maak me daar niet zo druk om, dat werkt voor mij het beste. Iedereen heeft zijn eigen mening en dat is prima. Ik zorg ervoor dat ik me op mezelf concentreer en met het team blijf doorwerken. Dat is wat ik in de hand heb en wat het belangrijkste is.”

Niet nerveus

De nuchtere Nederlander vervolgt: “Ik word er verder niet nerveus van. Ik stap in m’n auto, heb een gaspedaal, rempedaal en stuur, en daar draait het om. Het maakt niet uit hoeveel erover geschreven wordt, het principe blijft voor mij hetzelfde. We zijn nu weer in Sochi en daar moeten we ons op focussen”, zo wordt de Limburger ook geciteerd op zijn eigen website Verstappen.com.

De pers is daar heel erg goed in. Gisteren Docu van Michael Schumacher gezien. Ze schrijven hem maanden de hemel in, en 1 foutje en ze zeiken hem weer af.
Ze schrijven (en geven ook nog als een klasmeester cijfers) over F1 terwijl ze nog nooit in een F1 op volle snelheid hebben gereden.
