Max Verstappen vertelt tegen Olav Mol van ZiggoSport wat er allemaal mis ging tijdens de eerste vrije trainingen in de Grand Prix van Turkije op Intercity Istanbul Park. De Limburger vertelt in gesprek met Mol over het gedrag van de RB16B tijdens de eerste vrije training en de tweede vrije training.

Duidelijk wordt dat er werk aan de winkel is voor het team van Red Bull Racing om de auto alsnog op snelheid te krijgen vóór de kwalificatie van zaterdag.

Verstappen vertelt in gesprek met Mol: "Ja, de auto draaide gewoon niet goed genoeg aan de voorkant, heel veel onderstuur zeg maar. Het was over het algemeen een lastige dag, waar we eigenlijk niet tot een goede balans in de auto kwamen, allebei de sessies niet.”

"Ook de langere runs waren niet goed"

Verstappen herhaalt dat hij geen beste start van het raceweekend beleefde. “Nee, vandaag was het gewoon niet goed, dus we moeten wel aan de slag ja. De long run was ook te langzaam ten opzichte van Mercedes. Voor de rest was het allemaal prima, alleen de rondetijden waren niet zo goed en dat kan weleens gebeuren natuurlijk. We moeten gewoon begrijpen waar het probleem zit of in ieder geval waar we tijd kunnen winnen en dat gaan we nu bekijken.”

Aanpassingen

Het team van Red Bull Racing zal dus hopen dat aanpassingen aan de afstelling ook daadwerkelijk zullen leiden tot snellere rondetijden. Sergio Perez beleefde ook geen vlekkeloze vrijdag, maar de Mexicaan zag het nog wel goed komen.

Komt het nog goed?

Wellicht valt het inderdaad allemaal alsnog op z'n plaats voor Verstappen dit weekend. Red Bull Racing heeft zaterdagochtend de tijd om de bolides alsnog op snelheid te krijgen tijdens de derde vrije training. Bovendien blijkt zaterdagochtend dat - zoals weervoorspellers al voorzagen - het afgelopen nacht inderdaad geregend heeft boven het circuit. Het wordt dus spannend of het een droge of natte kwalificatie wordt vandaag in Turkije.

Andersom heeft Mercedes ook sit soort weekenden gekend waarbij het op zaterdag toch nog goed kwam.
Red Bull zal een nachtje werk hebben gedaan met de simulator en engineers. Nu nog een droge baan om de aanpassingen te verifiëren….
