Max Verstappen content met herstel na belabberde vrijdag: "Al met al behoorlijk blij"

Max Verstappen hoeft zich niet te schamen voor de derde tijd tijdens de kwalificatie voor de Grand Prix van Turkije op Intercity Istanbul Park. Lewis Hamilton was aanzienlijk sneller dan de Nederlander, maar Verstappen is erg te spreken over het herstel dat hij en zijn team hebben weten te bereiken na een belabberde vrijdag. Verstappen kwalificeerde zich als derde achter Lewis Hamilton en Valtteri Bottas.

Hamilton vanaf P11

Als gevolg van de gridpenalty voor Lewis Hamilton wegens het vervangen van belangrijke motoronderdelen, schuift Verstappen een plekje naar voren op de grid. Valtteri Bottas start vanaf pole position. Mercedes-kampioen Lewis Hamilton moet tien plaatsen terug op de grid en dat geeft Verstappen wellicht de uitgelezen kans om de leiding in het WK terug te veroveren.

Sterk herstel

Max Verstappen is dan ook zeker niet ontevreden over zijn prestaties tijdens de kwalificatie. Voor de microfoon van Paul di Resta vertelt de Red Bull-coureur: "De kwalificatie was in het begin wel listig gezien de omstandigheden. Gezien onze prestaties van gisteren hebben wij het toch behoorlijk goed weten te herstellen. De rondes waren redelijk goed, al verloor ik wat op het lange rechte stuk in mijn laatste ronde.

"Daar moeten we nog naar kijken, maar uiteindelijk hadden we niet de snelheid om voor pole te vechten. Toch vind ik het een redelijk goed herstel ten opzichte van gisteren, dus dan is de derde plaats het maximaal haalbare resultaat voor ons vandaag."

Blij

Verstappen denkt zondag goed voor de dag te kunnen komen. "Ik mag als tweede starten, laten we nog even afwachten wat het weer zal doen komende nacht, maar alles bij elkaar ben ik behoorlijk blij", vertelt hij.

Uiteraard houdt Verstappen het kampioenschap in zijn achterhoofd tijdens de race van zondag. Verstappen zegt: "Ik ga zoveel mogelijk punten scoren."

Dit circuit is door de extreme grip wel een bandenvretertje, dus als Max voor Hamilton weet te finishen zou ik dat al een prima resultaat vinden op deze Mercedes baan.

Het is wel zaak om Bottas te pakken bij de start, anders kan die de boel ophouden zodat Hamilton snel naar voren kan komen.

  Ik denk niet dat Bottas dat bewust zal doen. Hij zal ook nog een race willen winnen en dan kan hij beter weg proberen te rijden bij de rest van het veld. Je weet anders dat Mercedes het met de pitstops zo gaat plannen dat Bottas achter Hamilton terecht komt.

Damage control. Hamilton stormt wel naar voren.
Hopelijk is de RB16 competatiever in de resterende races, maar lijkt erop dat de Mercedes 'soepeler' is.

  Leclerc is agressief in het verdedigen. Maar ik hoop dat Leclerc op de propere strook meteen Max weet te verschalken en er met Bottas vandoor gaat. Max moet het maar uitvechten met Lewis. Veel leuker voor de neutralere supporters (zoals dit jaar alle Ferraristen en Mclarenisten zijn). En dan is er nog Alonso, alsjeblief!
