Valtteri Bottas pakt zijn eerste overwinning van 2021 in Istanbul: "Misschien de beste race van mijn leven"

Valtteri Bottas gaat er met de zege vandoor in de Turkse Grand Prix op Istanbul Park. De Mercedes-coureur was sneller dan Verstappen en Perez. Bottas stond al een tijd droog qua goede resultaten, maar in Turkije kan Bottas weer eens lachen.

"Ik denk dat dit één van mijn beste races ooit was", vertelt Bottas met een bescheiden glimlach op zijn gezicht.

De Finse coureur reed van pole tot finish vrijwel constant vooraan en hij wist Max Verstappen achter zich te houden. Wel moest hij Charles Leclerc inhalen, nadat de Ferrari probeerde om lang door te rijden op de intermediates. Bottas maakte wél een bandenwissel en wist daarna Charles Leclerc's Ferrari uit te remmen, waarna uiteindelijk ook Leclerc de pitstraat opzocht voor vers rubber.

Bottas stond lange tijd droog

Bottas wist vorig jaar in Rusland voor het laatst een Grand Prix op zijn naam te schrijven. Na zijn pole position in Portimão, Portugal van begin dit seizoen, was er lange tijd weinig te lachen voor de Finse coureur, die na dit seizoen wordt vervangen door George Russell. Hij is dan ook opgelucht: "Het heeft even geduurd, maar het voelt goed."

Hij vertelt in gesprek met David Coulthard: "Los van een kleine uitglijder ging alles goed, ik had alles onder controle. Zoals ik voor de race al had gezegd is de auto erg snel en ik had ook veel vertrouwen en kon het echt controleren. Het is niet makkelijk om de juiste strategie te kiezen en banden kiezen in deze omstandigheden. Ik ben gewoon blij dat het nu eens een keer wel soepel verliep voor mij, for once."

Bottas legt nog uit dat het allemaal niet makkelijk was in de half-natte omstandigheden waarin foutjes zo gemaakt zijn. Maar, zo besluit hij: "Dit voelt goed, het voelt als een welverdiende overwinning."

And nobody gives a ****. Niet bij Mercedes en hier ook niet gezien het gebrek aan reacties. Maar prima gedaan door Bottas en het is hem gegund. Waarschijnlijk de laatste race die hij zal winnen, zeker zodra hij weg is bij Mercedes (al weet je maar nooit, ik had ook gedacht dat Ricciardo nooit meer zou winnen na zijn vertrek bij Red Bull).

Onbegrijpelijk dat Max die Bottas niet kon hebben. Of Max zijn auto was shit of Merc is momenteel veruit superieur.
