Button wel fan van sprintkwalificatie: "Ik hou ervan!"

Het nieuwe sprintkwalificatie-format kan nog niet bepaald op veel fans rekenen. Prominenten uit de sport zijn nog niet geheel overtuigd van het proefballontje. Vooral Mercedes-teambaas Toto Wolff ziet het nut er niet van in. Toch is er iemand die er dol op is: Jenson Button.

De wereldkampioen van 2009 geniet met volle teugen van het nieuwe format. Bij Sky Sports spreekt hij zich uit: "Ik weet dat een aantal mensen dachten dat het vreemd was om de sprintraces te doen maar ik hou ervan. Ik denk dat het een soort mix is voor de coureurs. Maar ook voor de engineers en de jongens die over de strategieën gaan."

Button ziet dat het voor meer spanning zorgt: "Het is een ander weekend wanneer je een sprintrace op zaterdag hebt. Ik vind het leuk. Ik hou van kwalificeren op vrijdag omdat het betekent dat de jongens minder voorbereidingstijd hebben. Ze hebben één uur in plaats van de normale drie uur."

    Sprintraces zijn alleen van belang voor de topteams vanwege de startopstelling.

    De rest rijdt zijn rondjes zonder veel risico om schadevrij over de finishlijn te komen..

    Het format is opzich niks mee. Echter is het met de huidige F1 auto’s gewoon een kansloos concept. Je kan toch al niet inhalen dus waarom ook nog een extra optocht erbij doen. Mochten we volgend jaar kunnen volgen (binnen 1,5 seconde) weet ik zeker dat een sprintrace voor toegevoegde waarde kan zorgen dat is het nu niet het geval helaas. Wat een goede (tijdelijke) oplossing voor nu zal zijn is het verplicht maken van het starten op de zachte band. Dan speelt de banden slijtage een rol en kan je kiezen voor sparen of een gat trekken.

    Mijn mening:
    Silverstone was leuk (8), Monza was oké.. (6) en dus voor nu gemiddeld een 7. Met Brazilië nog te gaan vind ik het erg voorbarig om al van een succes te spreken.

    Als Brazilië saai is of oké... is het maar een matige voldoende... de criteria van succes is dan wel erg laag.
