Mercedes-engineer: "De beide Red Bull's kunnen knokken voor pole"

De belangrijkste engineer van het team van Mercedes - Andrew Shovlin - meent dat zijn team terrein verloor tussen de eerste en de tweede vrije training van de Amerikaanse Grand Prix. Vrijdagochtend was het team met Bottas bijna een seconde per ronde sneller dan Max Verstappen. In de tweede vrije training was het gat inderdaad minder groot. Volgens de 'Trackside Engineering Director' van Mercedes zullen de beide Red Bull's vanavond volwaardig meevechten voor de Pole Position, zo stelt hij.

"Leek alsof wij tempo verloren"

Shovlin is niet erg tevreden over de ontwikkeling die zijn team gedurende de vrijdagse trainingen doorliep. "De tweede sessie zag er niet zo sterk uit, het was gemakkelijk om de banden te oververhitten en dat maakte het moeilijker om consistent te zijn. Lewis had een ronde geschrapt waardoor we er competitiever uit zouden zien, maar hoe dan ook, het leek alsof we een beetje tempo hadden verloren."

De koperen ploert scheen volop

Shovlin vertelt verder: "Dat kan aan een aantal dingen liggen; misschien hadden we ons niet goed aangepast aan de warmere omstandigheden, anderen zijn misschien verbeterd. Het is ook mogelijk dat een aantal van onze aanpassingen niet werkten zoals verwacht", zo analyseerde hij openlijk in zijn terugblik op vrije trainingen op vrijdag.

Spannend

Shovlin verwacht dat het dicht op elkaar zal zitten dit weekend in Texas. "Er is genoeg waar wij kunnen verbeteren, maar het algemene gevoel na de tweede sessie is dat het allemaal erg dicht op elkaar zit aan de top. Beide Red Bull's zien eruit alsof zij volop in de strijd om pole mee doen."

De kwalificatie voor de Amerikaanse Grand Prix op COTA is vanavond om 23:00 uur Nederlandse tijd.

We gaan straks vanzelf wel zien wie zijn auto naar pole gaat schoffelen, eerst nog ff lekker VT3 kijken zometeen.

Lewis reed een tijd die 0,1 sec sneller was dan die van Perez, maar die werd hem afgenomen. Daarna deed hij longruns. Dus Lewis kan nog veel sneller.
