Wolff sluit zich zoveel mogelijk af van het nieuws: "Kan het lezen bij de kapper of de lunch"

De ferme titelstrijd tussen Max Verstappen en Lewis Hamilton is wereldwijd voer voor gesprek. De meningen en opinies vliegen je elke dag om de oren. Mercedes-teambaas Toto Wolff wordt soms helemaal gek van alle meningen en geruchten, de Oostenrijker doet dan ook zijn best om zijn gedachten te verzetten.

Toch is Wolff niet tegen alle meningen, artikelen en geruchten. Tegenover Sky spreekt de Oostenrijkse teambaas zich uit: "Het is belangrijk dat we de fans en de media hebben. Maar eigenlijk is het achtergrondgeluid. Je kan het lezen tijdens je middagboterham of in de kappersstoel. Als het puntje bij paaltje komt moet je je kunnen concentreren op wat er in het bedrijf gebeurt."

Wolff kan dan ook heel erg genieten van zijn werk. Het is elke dag weer een feestje voor de invloedrijke Oostenrijker. Wolff: "Tijdens een seizoen win je ongeveer twee seconden performance. Dit zijn de kleine overwinningen die je boekt. Om dat te ontdekken, dat is enorm leuk."

    Ik ga er vandaag maar eens voor zitten om te zien hoeveel negatieve reacties dit hier weer oproept onder een bepaalde groep “fans”. Misschien zou ik beter op de positieve reacties kunnen letten, zullen er vast een paar minder zijn.

    Waaruit blijkt dat hij gek wordt van alle meningen en geruchten? Is het misschien een uitgeworpen hengeltje naar de (vermeende) grote druk waaronder hij (misschien) zal bezwijken?

    Als je alles leest wat er over je wordt geschreven of gezegd, dan wordt je inderdaad gek, iedereen heeft tegenwoordig zo z’n zegje over het hele gebeuren, mede mogelijk gemaakt door de huidige communicatieplatfomen.
    Je kunt je maar beter focussen op waar je zelf invloed op hebt, en dat zo goed mogelijk proberen te doen, en dan zie je vanzelf wel of dat genoeg was om het doel te bereiken. Elke energie die je steekt in randzaken die er niet toe doen, of waar je zelf geen invloed op hebt, is verloren energie.
    De afgelopen zeven jaar ging alles voor de wind, en kon Mercedes eigenlijk alleen maar verliezen van zichzelf.
    Nu is er voor het eerst sinds lange tijd echte competitie, dat vergt net even een wat andere aanpak, en komen er toch twijfels en spanningen binnen het team. Nu zie je het Mercedes bolwerk, wat eigenlijk onoverwinnelijk leek, toch wat aan het wankelen is geraakt.
    Hier zaten we al jaren op te wachten, er is geen enkele zekerheid wie er met de titels vandoor gaan.
