Carlos Sainz was de grote tropische verrassing van de Braziliaanse sprintkwalificatie. De Spaanse Ferrari-coureur had een topstart en wist zich zelfs voorbij Max Verstappen te worstelen. Hij hield de Limburger niet achter zich maar finishte wel op een knappe derde plaats.

De op softs gestarte Spanjaard was zeer in zijn nopjes met zijn resultaat. Na afloop reflecteerde hij op zijn sprint in de microfoon van Felipe Massa: "De start was fantastisch. Ik had er zo'n eentje nodig want de starts wilde ik verbeteren in de tweede seizoenshelft. Als je zo'n superstart hebt is dat wel een enorme boost voor je zelfvertrouwen."

Vooral in de eerste ronde van de sprintkwalificatie liet de snelle Spanjaard zijn tanden zien. Hij is er blij mee: "In de eerste drie bochten ging ik vol in de aanval en probeerde ik posities goed te maken. Het was nogal krap met Checo en Max maar het lukte. Maar daarna werd het lastig met de softs maar we hielden Checo achter ons."

Ik snap niet waarom men zo verrast is over Sainz zijn prestaties. Doet nu al aardig wat jaartjes mee in deze sport en heeft niet de minste verslagen.
