Horner gaf Perez zekerheid met contractverlenging: "Checo is beter geworden"

Max Verstappen is momenteel nog steeds in een stevige titelstrijd verwikkeld met Lewis Hamilton. De Nederlandse Red Bull-coureur krijgt in de tweede seizoenshelft steeds vaker sterke rugdekking van zijn teamgenoot Sergio Perez. De Mexicaan lijkt zich steeds meer op zijn plek te voelen en dat zorgt voor betere resultaten.

Aan het begin van het seizoen vielen de resultaten van Perez nog redelijk tegen. Bij Red Bull Racing werd dan ook koortsachtig gezocht naar een oplossing voor dit probleem. Teambaas Christian Horner legt het uit bij Auto, Motor und Sport: "We gingen bij elkaar zitten in de zomerbreak en we realiseerde ons dat we een betere Checo zouden krijgen als hij meer zekerheid had."

Het was een simpel optelsommetje voor Red Bull. Perez kreeg contractverlenging en de resultaten van de Mexicaan werden met de race beter. Horner keek er naar en zag dat het goed was. De teambaas is tevreden: "De tweede seizoenshelft liet zien dat we gelijk hadden. Checo is veel beter geworden."
