Todt moet niets weten van kritiek op Saoedische GP: "Moeten ons niet teveel met politiek bezig houden"

Dit weekend rijdt de Formule 1 voor het eerst in Saoedi-Arabië. De komst van de sport naar dit fel bekritiseerde land kreeg bakken met commentaar. Het land staat nou niet bekend als een hoogvlieger op het gebied van mensenrechten en de gang naar het land rijmt ook niet met de 'We Race As One'-campagne.

Voorafgaand dit weekend riepen mensenrechten organisaties de coureurs op om zich uit te spreken. Amnesty International liet in Nederland weten graag in gesprek te willen met Max Verstappen. Lewis Hamilton draagt ook dit weekend zijn regenbooghelm en Sebastian Vettel ging karten met Saoedische vrouwen en draagt weer zijn regenboogschoenen.

Politieke dingen

Afzwaaiend FIA-president Jean Todt is in ieder geval van mening dat de koningsklasse van de autosport zich niet té politiek moet gedragen. Bij het Amerikaanse CNBC spreekt hij zich uit: "Saoedi-Arabië kon tot 2018 geen internationale evenementen organiseren omdat vrouwen er niet mochten autorijden. Nu mogen ze dat wel, dus er is het één en ander veranderd. Maar we moeten ons niet met teveel politieke dingen bezig houden."

Protesteren

Todt maakt heel duidelijk dat de Formule 1 en politiek elkaar niet te veel voor de voeten moeten lopen. Hij is stellig: "Autosport moet niet worden gebruikt als een politiek platform. We gaan inderdaad naar een aantal landen voor wat twijfels zijn over de gang van zaken. We geven mensen de kans om te praten en we geven een beeld van het land. Er is een volledige vrijheid voor iedereen die wil praten. Als iemand wil protesteren, dan mag dat."

heel erg makkelijk. Geld regeert, meer is het niet.
En om dat zo'n hypocriet en vooral niets zeggen statement er achter aan te gooien van... "iedereen mag praten en mag protesteren" is al helemaal tenenkrommend. Dat is nu juist het probleem, dat kan en mag dus in veel van die landen niet.

Ontzettend hypocriet. Op het moment dat je je als organisatie als "inclusief" presenteert, nodig je gewoon de kritiek over jezelf uit zodra je je laat kopen door regimes die de mensenrechten schenden. Dat heeft niets met politiek te doen, maar alles met twijfelachtige principes.

De FIA en de FIFA zijn allebei één pot nat. Alles voor de knaken, en voor de rest boeit het ze allemaal geen ene reet hoeveel mensen er zijn gestorven om zulke evenementen mogelijk te maken. Verder houden ze hun mond stijf dicht, maar mogen de deelnemers wel hun mening geven over de situatie (Wauw). Sterker nog bij, Max wordt er door Amnesty International zelfs op aangedrongen om zijn menining te geven, dat is pas echt de wereld op zijn kop!

  Herkenbaar. Sport is geld. En geld vormt altijd driehoeken met macht en politiek. Het is de kunst van de beoefenaars om die connecties te verstoppen. Maar ze zijn er altijd.

Wat een waardeloze kliek. Paar weken geleden brabbelde ze nog over een hoge morele standaard. Er is geen vrijheid, er vinden openbare executies plaats, maar hoera, vrouwen mogen auto rijden! Kortom het valt best mee. Braakneigingen krijg je van dit soort mensen. Had Todt vroeger redelijk hoog zitten, maar hij is geen knip voor de neus waard.

  Inderdaad. Als er een coureur in the heat od the moment iemand enigzins onheus bejegent, moeten ze zowat op het matje komen. Bah, als teambaas bij Ferrari had ik veel respect voor hem. Maar daar is inmiddels weinig van over.
