Wie volgt Jean Todt op als FIA-president? Dit zijn de kandidaten

Vandaag kiest autosportfederatie FIA de opvolger van Jean Todt. De Fransman was gisteren op het FIA-gala voor het laatst in functie als president van de autosportbond. Zijn laatste termijn zit erop en voor zijn opvolging zijn er slechts twee kandidaten. Beide met de nodige ervaring maar met minder naamsbekendheid.

Todt heeft jarenlang naam gemaakt als de teambaas van de sterrenploeg van Ferrari. Samen met Michael Schumacher beleefde bij enkele gouden jaren. Zijn twee mogelijke opvolgers zijn bij het grote publiek minder bekend. De namen Graham Stoker en Mohammed Ben Sulayem liggen namelijk niet bij iedereen in het geheugen. Tijd om even te kijken wie deze twee mogelijke nieuwe kopstukken zijn.

Graham Stoker

Graham Stoker werd geboren op 9 juli 1952 in het Verenigd Koninkrijk. De Brit is van origine advocaat maar bekleedt al zeer lang functies binnen de internationale autosport. In 2009 werd hij verkozen tot 'Deputy President for Sport' van de FIA. Stoker is daarnaast ook lid van de World Motor Sport Council. Hij is sinds 1985 betrokken bij de autosport en heeft meerdere functies bekleed binnen de Britse autosport. Doordat hij al sinds 2009 een hoge functie heeft binnen de FIA is hij de bekendste van de twee kandidaten. Daarnaast is hij in het verleden ook werkzaam geweest als steward bij onder andere de Formule 1 en het WTCC.

Mohammed Ben Sulayem

Stoker neemt het op tegen voormalig rallyrijder Mohammed Ben Sulayem. Ben Sulayem werd op 12 november 1961 geboren in Dubai en deed 18 keer mee aan een rally die meetelde voor het wereldkampioenschap. Zijn internationale rallycarrière was niet bijster succesvol maar in het Midden-Oosten is hij een ware legende op rally-gebied. Hij won 61 internationale rally's en hij werd 14 keer de rallykampioen van het Midden-Oosten. Na zijn succesvolle rally-loopbaan ruilde hij het racepak in voor de stropdas en was hij succesvol de voorzitter van de lokale autosportbond. Hiermee was hij mede verantwoordelijk voor de Grand Prix van Abu Dhabi. Daarnaast bekleedde hij meerdere functies binnen de FIA en gaat hij nu op voor de hoogste functie.

  Royalere, Liberty bepaalt waar er geraced wordt. FIA bepaalt de regeltjes voor het racen zelf. Dus wie in de FIA ook zitting neemt, het zal geen invloed hebben op waar geraced gaat worden.

Ik denk dat het goed is voor de internationalisering van de sport om te gaan voor een niet-Europeaan. Op dit moment komt 60% van de inkomsten van FIA voort uit Formule 1 en dat is (Ferrari uitgezonderd) op zijn beurt weer helemaal gefocust op Groot-Brittannië. Om daar dan weer een Brit boven te zetten, neh... Bovendien iemand bovenaan de voedselketen zetten met een andere achtergrond dan F1 (zoals Todt) is allicht ook gezond. Kan misschien ten faveure komen van andere raceklassen.

  De teams hebben enkele maanden geleden aangegeven niet onder een SC situatie te willen finishen en de wedstrijdleider Masi heeft dat perfect uitgevoerd.
