Verstappen grijpt naast prestigieuze BBC-sportprijs

Een week na zijn wereldkampioenschap Formule 1 heeft Max Verstappen de strijd om een prestigieuze prijs verloren. De Nederlandse Red Bull-coureur was namelijk genomineerd voor de 'World Sport Star'-award van de Britse omroep BBC. Hij had sterke tegenstanders maar verloor van een enigszins verrassende naam.

Elk jaar reikt de BBC prijzen uit voor de beste sportieve prestaties van het kalenderjaar. Op een gala ,vergelijkbaar met het NOS sportgala in Nederland, worden de sporters in het zonnetje gezet. Naast enkele prijzen voor sporthelden van Britse bodem kunnen ook de internationale sterren een prijs bijschrijven.

Paardenrace

Verstappen was dus één van de kanshebbers voor de belangrijke sportprijs. Hij was hier genomineerd samen met onder andere tennis-grootheid Novak Djokovic, bokskampioen Saul Alvarez en sprint-sensatie Elaine Thompson-Herah. 

Geen van deze supersportsterren werd echter uitgeroepen tot winnaar. Verstappen en co moesten het afleggen tegen de Ierse jockey Rachael Blackmore. Deze naam doet in Nederland geen belletje rinkelen maar in het Verenigd Koninkrijk is ze een grote naam aangezien ze een belangrijke paardenrace won.

Hamilton

Verstappens Formule 1-rivaal Lewis Hamilton viel ook niet in de prijzen. De Mercedes-coureur was na zijn goede seizoen niet eens genomineerd voor de belangrijkste prijs van het gala. Vorig jaar werd Hamilton verkozen tot Sports Personality of the Year maar hij kreeg dit jaar niet de kans om die titel te prolongeren. Hij werd opgevolgd door de tennisster Emma Raducanu. 

Verstappen heeft nog één kans om een mooie sporttitel binnen te slepen. De Limburger is namelijk in eigen land genomineerd voor de titel van sportman van het jaar. In 2016 ging hij al aan de haal met deze prijs na zijn eerste spectaculaire jaar bij Red Bull Racing.

      Valt wel mee, vindt dit soort prijzen sowieso onzin. Je kunt ze gewoonweg niet vergelijken met elkaar. Ken ze niet allemaal, maar stuk voor stuk hebben ze wereldprestaties geleverd in hun eigen categorie.

    Ik neem aan dat Max in Brasil zit, zo niet, dan zou ik daar rap heen gaan, tijdje relaxen.

    Zet Jantje Lammers maar in om die prijzen her en der op te halen, die vind dat wel leuk ook.

      Max is gistermiddag eindelijk naar zijn familie in Limburg gevlogen, om oa. zijn nieuwe neefje te bewonderen. Kan zijn moeder hem ook eindelijk in de armen sluiten en feliciteren met zijn WK titel.
      Daarna zal de reis vermoedelijk wel weer naar Lencois in Brazilië gaan, waar Kelly's moeder, broer en neef ook naar toe gaan.

      Tijd geleden nog eens Rainbow heropgericht, maar dat was één zielige partij.
