In 2021 stonden er tijdens het seizoen 21 verschillende coureurs aan de start van de races. Robert Kubica eindigde als 20ste in het kampioenschap. Het was eigenlijk helemaal niet de bedoeling dat de Pool in actie zou komen dit seizoen maar het lot besliste anders. De comeback-kid reed toch nog twee races.

Op zaterdagochtend in Zandvoort kreeg Kubica een belangrijk telefoontje. Hij weet dat hij als Alfa Romeo-reserve altijd paraat moet staan en in Nederland was het eindelijk zover. Kimi Räikkönen testte positief op het coronavirus en moest twee races missen. Kubica mocht plaatsnemen in de Alfa en moest snel aan de bak. Hij had slechts één training om zich voor te bereiden op zijn onverwachte comeback in de koningsklasse van de autosport.

Monza

Kubica deed het zeker niet slecht in de oranjekleurige Hollandse duinen. In de kwalificatie reed hij de 18e tijd en hield daarmee allebei de coureurs van Haas achter zich. In de race had hij wat meer moeite en kwam hij als vijftiende over de finishlijn. Zijn comeback was echter niet eenmalig, Räikkönen testte nog steeds positief en dat betekende dat Kubica op Monza ook weer mocht opdraven.

Prima prestatie

De Pool kreeg direct een zwaar weekend voor zijn kiezen. Hij moest aan de bak aangezien het één van de races was met een sprintkwalificatie. Hij deed het zeker niet slecht en hield in de sprint toch een enkele coureur achter zich. Een prima prestatie voor een coureur die al geruime tijd niet meer op competitief niveau in de Formule 1 had geracet. Door een fikse hoeveelheid uitvalbeurten kwam hij in Monza op de veertiende plek over de finishlijn. Het was de laatste keer dat Kubica dit jaar in actie kwam want Räikkönen was inmiddels genezen van COVID.

Kubica verdiende met zijn doorzettingsvermogen meer. Jammer dat deze topcoureur door dat ongeluk is blijven steken op 1 GP overwinning.
