Verstappen eindigt op derde plaats bij verkiezing Europees sporter van het jaar

Max Verstappen toonde zich in het afgelopen seizoen een ware prijzenpakker. De Nederlandse Red Bull-coureur stond vrijwel altijd op het podium en bekroonde zijn jaar met een felbevochten wereldtitel. Het leverde hem zeer veel lof en waardering op. Overal ter wereld kreeg hij applaus en awards.

Toch heeft hij naast de titel van Europees sporter van het jaar gegrepen. De poll werd georganiseerd door het Poolse persbureau PAP. Meerdere grote persbureaus waaronder het ANP en het AFP werkten mee aan de verkiezing. Verstappen eindigde als derde achter de tennisser Novak Djokovic en voetballer Robert Lewandowski.

Landgenoten

Nederlands sportman van het jaar Verstappen zal er waarschijnlijk niet wakker van liggen. Hij heeft zijn grote doel bereikt met de wereldtitel in de Formule 1 en rust uit bij zijn schoonfamilie in Brazilië. Hij hield overigens zijn Olympische landgenoten Sifan Hassan en Harrie Lavreysen achter zich. Hij versloeg baanwielrenner Lavreysen ook al bij de sportman van het jaar-verkiezing in Nederland.

Hamilton

Ook Verstappens grote concurrent Lewis Hamilton kreeg flink wat steun onder de Europese persbureaus. De Britse zevenvoudig wereldkampioen kwam echter niet verder dan de veertiende plaats in de toch prestigieuze lijst van sporthelden. Volgend jaar zullen de twee kemphanen elkaar naar verwachting weer het vuur aan de schenen gaan leggen op de baan.

Alsof je sporters uit verschillende sporten kan vergelijken om te bepalen wie de beste is. Dit verkiezingen (in sport en in showbiz nog meer) zijn gewoon een grote circle jerk.

Merkwaardig dat Djokovic, die dit jaar respectievelijk naast de Golden Slam, Grand Slam en het record van de meeste Grand Slams ooit greep nu Europees Sporter is.

  Nauwelijks iets. Alleen 3 grand slams die hem in de mogelijkheid brachten om iets unieks te doen maar daarin jammerlijk faalde. Wat mij betreft vergelijkbaar met Hamilton dit jaar.
