Ricciardo had zijn rust nodig: "Was soms echt lachwekkend"

Daniel Ricciardo reed afgelopen seizoen voor het eerst voor het team van McLaren. De Australiër kende een rampzalige eerste seizoenshelft waarin hij veelvuldig werd verslagen door zijn teamgenoot Lando Norris. Het lachen verging de goedlachse Ricciardo al snel. In de tweede seizoenshelft ging het een stukje beter met hem.

Het was overduidelijk dat de Australiër vorig jaar de zomerstop nodig had. Norris reed rondjes om hem heen en het huilen stond hem nader dan het lachen. In Hongarije volgde weer een nieuw dieptepunt toen hij in zijn zwaard beschadigde McLaren slechts als elfde over de meet kwam. Er finishte die dag maar dertien coureurs en dat zegt genoeg over zijn dag.

Lachwekkend

Ricciardo geeft eerlijk toe dat hij die dag diep in de put zat. Tegenover Motorsport.com is hij heel erg open over de situatie. Hij is duidelijk: "Naast het neerslachtige gevoel was een deel van mij ook blij. Ik dacht, die eerste seizoenshelft is gewoon gegaan zoals ie ging. Het was soms echt lachwekkend. Ik wilde het vliegtuig in stappen en twee weken niet aan de Formule 1 denken."

Weg stappen

De Australiër geeft aan dat dit zijn aanpak is. Andere coureurs zullen in deze situatie immers anders reageren. De eerlijke McLaren-man geeft tekst en uitleg: "Iedereen gaat hier anders mee om. Ik moet er soms echt even van weg stappen. Ik ben geen coureur die altijd aan de Formule 1 denkt. Ik wist dat de zomerstop echt goed voor mij zou zijn."

Ik mag toch hopen dat Ric zijn ritme terug vind en dat hij het Lando wat moeilijker maakt. Komt ons ook weer ten goede.

Toen het voor Hamilton wat moeilijker verliep verdiepte hij zich meer in zijn werk (bijvoorbeeld de sim), Ricciardo loopt er min of meer voor weg.

In één zin het verschil tussen een absolute topper (en WK) en een net niet topper (geen WK)...
