Steiner viel haast van zijn stoel van verbazing

Het team van Haas kende afgelopen seizoen een werkelijk waardeloos seizoen. De Amerikaanse renstal scoorde geen enkel punt en coureurs Mick Schumacher en Nikita Mazepin konden geen potten breken. Ze reden voortdurend aan de staart van het veld en duelleerden praktisch alleen met elkaar.

Toch sloot Haas in de absolute slotfase van het seizoen aan bij de achterste regionen van het middenveld. In de seizoensfinale in Abu Dhabi kon Mick Schumacher bijvoorbeeld het gevecht aanknopen met Williams-coureur Nicholas Latifi. Haas kwam er nog niet langs maar ze konden wel volgen. Het was voor het team zelf een enorme verrassing.

Verbazing

Teambaas Günther Steiner viel haast van zijn stoel van verbazing. De Italiaan spreekt zijn gevoelens uit in gesprek met Motorsport.com: "Tijdens de laatste twee races kon ik amper geloven dat we maar iets van een/twee tienden van de achterzijde van het middenveld waren verwijderd. Hoe dat kan met een auto van bijna twee jaar oud? Ik snap het ook niet."

Andere teams

Steiner denkt dan ook niet dat zijn manschappen ineens een foefje hadden uitgehaald. Hij zoekt de oorzaak bij de concurrerende teams. Hij is duidelijk: "Andere teams hadden het gat eigenlijk groter moeten maken. Zij ontwikkelden hun auto's tenminste nog. De laatste twee races waren echt heel erg vreemd. In Saoedi-Arabië hadden we ineens maar anderhalve tienden achterstand en tijdens de wedstrijd streden we met de mannen van Williams."

Denk dit meer te maken had door het feit de laatste races de plaatsen al verdeeld waren. Williams ging mss niet tot het uiterste om dan met het risico hun wagen onnodig in de prak of stukken te rijden. Hun stand in de constructeurs stand lag min of meer vast.

Toch sneu eigenlijk… dat Gunter hier gewoon ruiterlijk moet toegeven dat ze by far het slechtste team van het veld zijn en ook dat ze qua ontwikkeling stil staan

  inderdaad droevig, en Steiner komt haast trots over met dit verhaal, terwijl het tegenovergestelde waar zou moeten zijn. Mooie peer die Günther hoor maar sportief gezien voegen ze niks meer toe

  Nee, dat is niet zo. Steiner / HAAS kondigde toch vooraf aan 2021 al aan dat ze 1 jaar niks gingen doen zodat ze al vroeg met 2022 bezig konden zijn? We wisten al dat ze dit seizoen zouden slachtofferen. Wat wèl sneu zou zijn is als ze in 2022 nog stèèds met de rode lantaarn rijden. Maar 2021 werd al opgegeven voordat ze eraan waren begonnen, dus je moet t wel effe in perspectief zien..

Andere teams zagen de voorsprong op Haas dan wel andere teams en hebben hun ontwikkeling elders, lees: op 2022, gefocust. Dus inderdaad, die achterstand liep niet meer op.

  Maar hij zegt juist dat ze zelf zonder ontwikkeling inliepen. En dat is dan zeker vreemd.
  
  Enige kan zijn dar ze zelf de auto beter afgesteld kregen (maar sat verwacht ik ook niet dat dat pas na 2 jaar het geva is) of dat andere teams aan het experimenteren zijn geweest met 2022 onderdelen.

  Ik denk ook dat veel teams de ontwikkeling hebben gezet naar de 2022 auto, vandaar dat Haas niet verder op kwam.

  Wat me op zich wel weer verbaast omdat Muricanen toch niet echt het principe van 'meedoen is winnen' aanhangen. Oneerbiedig gezegd zou je Haas veldvulling kunnen noemen.

Waarom zou Williams zich nog moeten inspannen tijdens de laatste race's, op het poduim gingen ze toch niet belanden en hun positie in de ranglijst en dus de centen waren veilig.

Dit stukje klopt niet helemaal. Haas kwam er niet voorbij? Schumacher zat voor Latifi in Abu Dhabi.
