Norris trots op maatje Sainz: "Steeds meer mensen zien wat hij kan"

Carlos Sainz en Lando Norris vormden jarenlang een geliefd koppel bij McLaren. Het duo kreeg al snel de bijnaam 'Carlando' en veel fans waren dan ook teleurgesteld toen Sainz naar Ferrari vertrok. Hij beleefde daar afgelopen seizoen een sterk eerste jaar in Italiaanse dienst.

Sainz was afgelopen seizoen vaak sneller dan zijn nieuwe teamgenoot Charles Leclerc. De Spanjaard eindigde als vijfde in het WK en versloeg ook beide McLarens. Norris was niet kwaad of teleurgesteld toen zijn voormalige teammaatje hem versloeg. Sterker nog, Norris was heel erg trots. De Brit toont zich van zijn sportieve kant en deelt dat met de buitenwereld.

Extreem goed

De McLaren-coureur steekt zijn trotse gevoel niet onder stoelen of banken. In gesprek met Motorsport.com spreekt Norris zich uit: "Carlos is als het aan mij ligt één van de beste coureurs in het veld. Hij zorgde ervoor dat ik er minder goed uitkwam, dat kwam er dus over het algemeen door het feit dat hij extreem goed is. Ik denk dat ik in 2021 een stap heb gezet die net zo goed of beter was dan die van hem."

Onderschat

Norris heeft daarnaast ook het idee dat Sainz jarenlang is onderschat door alles en iedereen. De Brit heeft er lang over nagedacht en weet nu waardoor dat komt. "Carlos heeft bij Toro Rosso, Renault en McLaren gereden waardoor men minder goed wist waartoe hij in staat was. Steeds meer mensen zien nu wat hij allemaal kan en wat voor coureur hij is. Carlos heeft Charles heel erg vaak verslagen."
