Bottas gaf Alfa Romeo voorkeur boven terugkeer naar Williams

Valtteri Bottas racet vanaf komend seizoen voor het team van Alfa Romeo, maar hij had ook voor een vertrouwde omgeving kunnen kiezen. De Fin had namelijk tevens de optie om terug te keren naar zijn oude werkgever Williams, zo onthulde hij in de Beyond the Grid-podcast. Bottas reed de voorbije vijf seizoenen voor Mercedes, maar raakte voor 2022 zijn stoeltje daar kwijt aan George Russell.

Bij Mercedes was Bottas zelden meer dan een adjudant voor Lewis Hamilton. Bij Alfa Romeo is hij degene waar iedereen naar kijkt om het team richting te geven. De Fin moet daarnaast debutant Guanyu Zhou onder zijn hoede nemen. Dat vooruitzicht wist hem meer te bekoren dan een terugkeer op het oude nest Williams, waar hij van 2013 tot en met 2016 al voor reed.

Bottas zegt over die keuze: "Ja, ik had meerdere opties voor 2022. Het kwam erop neer dat ik moest kiezen tussen Alfa Romeo en Williams. Ik heb getracht om zoveel mogelijk informatie te verzamelen en aan de hand daarvan heb ik een beslissing genomen. En dat was verre van makkelijk. Williams is weer op de goede weg en ze gaan een mooie toekomst tegemoet. Maar op een of andere manier had ik een beter gevoel bij Alfa Romeo."

Nieuwe start

Een van de dingen die meespeelt in dat gevoel is dat hij bij Alfa Romeo een compleet andere krachtbron tot zijn beschikking krijgt dan hij tot nu toe gewend was. Bottas heeft alleen nog maar met Mercedes-aandrijving gereden en Alfa Romeo rijdt met Ferrari-motoren.

"Het is wel fijn om een keer met iets anders dan de Mercedes V6 te gaan rijden", geeft Bottas toe. "Om eens niet de link met Mercedes te hebben. Het is compleet nieuw voor mij en totaal iets anders, zodoende markeert het voor mij echt een nieuwe start."

  Dat was ook mijn eerste gedachte.
  Staat ook raar natuurlijk. Van Williams promoveren naar Mercedes. 5 jaar slaaf zijn en dan weer terug naar Williams.
  Dan voelt het logischer en “eervoller” om naar een ander team te gaan.
  Wel denk ik dat Williams dit seizoen sterker zal zijn dan Alfa maar ach, Bottas vindt dat niet zo erg denk ik. Die reed toch al nooit met het mes tussen de tanden.

  Bij de gedachte dat Wolff mogelijkerwijs nog ff bij Williams om de hoek zou kunnen komen kijken met het dwingende verzoek om nog wat motors voor Lewis te testen brak bij Valtteri het angstzweet uit...

Dan had ik toch voor Williams gekozen, ik verwacht daar echt wel meer van de weg naar boven is ingezet!

  Ik zie Bottas ook geen 3 jaar meer rijden. Maakt zn contract hier af en gaat daarna Rally rammen ofzo.
  
  Ik meende dat zijn contract voor zeker 2 jaar is met een optie op een 3de. Na twee jaar ploeteren in het achterveld zonder goede inhaalskills is Bottas er vast al wel zat van.

Ik snap zijn keuze, maar mijn gevoel zegt dat Williams weer op de weg terug is, waar Alfa in de achterhoede lijkt te blijven hangen. Als Williams ook komende seizoenen eenzelfde progressie weet te maken, dan zullen ze komend seizoen Alfa voorbij gaan en het wellicht Aston Martin al moeilijk gaan maken.

Ik kan het me wel voorstellen. Williams is letterlijk en in alle opzichten een stap terug voor Bottas. Alfa Romeo is een nieuwe uitdaging. Zelfs als Williams volgend jaar beter blijkt te presteren dan Alfa, denk ik dat Bottas liever de strijd aangaat en een nieuw team opbouwt dan gewoon maar voor het oude vertrouwde gaan.
