Voormalig Honda-criticaster Alonso baalt: "Jammer dat ze vertrekken"

Fernando Alonso was in zijn tweede McLaren-periode niet bepaald te spreken over toenmalig motorleverancier Honda. De Spanjaard liet met enige regelmaat zijn frustratie blijken en dat zorgde voor veel hilariteit bij de buitenwacht. Na enkele jammerlijke jaren verliet Honda de Britse ploeg en trokken ze naar Red Bull.

De samenwerking met Red Bull Racing en AlphaTauri was overduidelijk een veel groter succes. Vooral de combinatie met Max Verstappen was een ware succesformule. De Nederlander vocht afgelopen seizoen een verbeten titelduel en kroonde zich dan ook tot wereldkampioen. Het was gelijk het laatste succes van de Honda-Red Bull combo. De Japanse motorleverancier had namelijk aangegeven dat ze gingen stoppen met de Formule 1.

Eerlijke mening

Huidig Alpine-coureur Alonso vindt het jammer dat zijn voormalig kritiekpunt de sport verlaat. De tweevoudig wereldkampioen had het succes nooit zien aankomen. In gesprek met Motorsport.com deelt de Spanjaard zijn eerlijke mening met de buitenwereld: "Toen ze vertrokken bij McLaren had ik echt nooit gedacht dat ze echt gingen dromen van een wereldkampioenschap in de Formule 1."

Jammer

Maar Alonso kreeg ongelijk en Honda ontpopte zich tot een betrouwbare schakel in de succesformule van Red Bull Racing. De Spanjaard zag het gebeuren en baalt nu van het vertrek: "Ze hebben het echt heel erg goed gedaan en ze hebben de juiste mensen aangesteld. Ze hebben het management omgegooid en een nieuwe filosofie toegepast. Dat is gelukt en ik ben blij voor ze. Ik vind het dan ook jammer dat ze vertrekken, hopelijk komen ze op een dag terug."

Alonso, zonder enige twijfel een geweldig coureur maar als persoon nog wel eens controversiële beslissingen nam en uitspraken deed.
