Romain Grosjean blijft inzetten op Mercedes-test

Romain Grosjeans Formule 1-loopbaan kwam in 2020 met een klap ten einde. Na zijn angstaanjagende vuurbal-crash in Bahrein stapte hij niet meer in een Formule 1-bolide, al wil hij nog wel afscheid nemen van de koningsklasse van de autosport. Terwijl de Fransman in een Amerika een mooi nieuw hoofdstuk aan het schrijven is, is het vorige nog niet afgeschreven.

Het gaat Grosjean momenteel voor de wind. Afgelopen jaar debuteerde hij in de Indycars in Amerika en dat verliep veel beter dan verwacht. Het ging zelfs zó goed dat hij een stoeltje bij het topteam van Andretti verdiende. Toch knaagt er nog iets, hij heeft immers geen waardig afscheid kunnen nemen van de Formule 1. Door zijn vuurbal-incident liep hij zware brandwonden op aan zijn handen en kon hij niet meer in de wagen van zijn toenmalige team Haas stappen.

Roet in het eten

Hierdoor leek Grosjeans droom van een waardig Formule 1-afscheid te smelten als sneeuw voor de zon. Maar het topteam van Mercedes streek met de hand over het hart. De Duitse kampioensformatie wilde een privétest voor Grosjean op touw zetten en in 2021 moest het gaan gebeuren. De pandemie en botsende kalenders van de Formule 1 en de Indycar gooide echter roet in het eten.

Planning

In 2022 moet het dan gaan gebeuren en Grosjean blijft hoopvol dat de test er daadwerkelijk van gaat komen. Tegenover Motorsport.com laat hij blijken dat men bij Mercedes er precies zo over denkt: "Na Abu Dhabi heb ik Toto Wolff een berichtje gestuurd, enkele weken na die race dan. Hij heeft geantwoord. Het begon met 'bedankt' en eindigde met 'we moeten je dit jaar in die auto zien te krijgen'. Het staat dus nog gewoon op de planning."

  Zou sneu zijn. Beloofd is beloofd. Die bolide van vorig jaar kan prima naar Indianapolis gevlogen worden. Mooie PR stunt van maken dat F1 weer op indy rijdt en klaar is kees.

  ze hebben op de IMS in een oude schuur nog wel wat Michelins liggen welke over zijn van het gp weekend in 2005, sturen ze Grosjean daar toch de baan mee op, opgelost... :P

Grosjean is verleden tijd. Ik zou daar als teambaas geen moeite meer insteken ook al zou het publicitair wellicht iets opleveren. Ik zou Romain het advies geven om zich volledig te gaan richten op zijn gezin en kookboeken schrijven. Doei doei.
