Alonso legt lot sprints in handen van de fans: "Zij moeten beslissen"

Vorig jaar experimenteerde de Formule 1 met het nieuwe sprintkwalificatie-format. De sprints waren zeer ambitieus maar vielen niet bepaald in de smaak bij de teams, coureurs en de fans. Toch zien de hoge heren er wel heil in en wil men in 2022 nog meer sprints organiseren.

De sprintkwalificatie moet voor meer spektakel zorgen. In dit format wordt er op vrijdag gekwalificeerd, op zaterdag is dan de sprintkwalificatie en op zondag vindt de normale race plaats. Hierdoor wordt er drie keer op rij om de knikkers gestreden en dat zou veel publiek moeten trekken. Maar de fans waren vorig jaar niet bepaald fan van de sprints.

Stress

Ook de coureurs waren kritisch en zien graag verandering. De ervaren Fernando Alonso genoot wel van de sprints. De tweevoudig wereldkampioen genoot van de chaos en deelt dat met Motorsport.com: "De routine van het weekend verandert en daar ben ik wel blij mee. Er is slechts één training voordat de auto's naar parc fermé gaan. Dat levert stress op en dan staan er ook nog twee races op het programma."

Fans

Maar Alonso wil niet beslissen over de toekomst van de sprints. De Spanjaard is van mening dat de fans hier het laatste woord moeten hebben. Hij wil dat ze enkele vragen moeten beantwoorden: "We moeten enkele vragen aan ze voorleggen. Wat vind je van het weekend? Wat was er wel en niet goed? Zij moeten beslissen wat wij gaan veranderen. Voor ons als teams maakt dat niet veel uit."

  De "echte fans" zitten op het VIP Dock in de paddock te dineren met Gold en Platinum toegangspassen betaald met hun Black Editions Visa kaarten op uitnodiging.
  
  Dat zijn ook de fans waar Brawn en Domenicali mee praten en feedback van krijgen, dus als die het goed vinden, is het goed. Niet de Mening van een of andere Larry Perkins op een vaag forum ;-)

  Gisteren is dankzij de inspanningen van onze grote vriend @Pietje Bell opgehelderd dat de geraadpleegde fanbase met een meerderheid van 6,7% positief is over de Sprint Race.

Een race is altijd leuk om naar te kijken, ook die sprints. Maar de meerwaarde ervan bleef mij onduidelijk. Een apart(!) sprintkampioenschap met reverse grid zou interessant kunnen zijn voor middenmoot-teams en rode lantaarns. En misschien prestige voor topteams of piloten in top-teams.
