Ricciardo geëerd in thuisland Australië

Daniel Ricciardo kende afgelopen jaar een zeer wisselvallig eerste jaar in dienst van McLaren. Toch wist de goedlachse Australiër de Grand Prix van Italië te winnen. Verder bleven de grote resultaten uit en stelde hij veelal teleur. Na het seizoen vertrok hij terug naar zijn huisland, daar kreeg hij een grote verrassing voorgeschoteld.

Ricciardo is momenteel de enige Australiër in de Formule 1 en kent een redelijk succesvolle loopbaan. Hij debuteerde in 2011 in de Formule 1 bij HRT en kreeg als Red Bull-junior een jaar later promotie naar Toro Rosso. In 2014 mocht gaan rijden voor Red Bull Racing en daar beleefde hij zijn grootste successen. Hij won in zijn loopbaan in totaal acht races, waarvan de meeste in dienst van de Oostenrijkse ploeg. Sinds vorig jaar rijdt hij voor McLaren, waar hij neerstreek na een mislukt Renault-avontuur.

Lid in orde van Australië

Zijn prestaties hebben in Australië in ieder geval een grote indruk achter gelaten. Ricciardo is namelijk opgenomen in de Australia Day Honours List van 2021. Dat betekent dat hij is benoemd tot Lid in de Orde van Australië. Hij heeft de titel ontvangen vanwege zijn belangrijke verdiensten in de autosport als deelnemer en ambassadeur.

Brabham

Hij is zeker niet de eerste uit de Formule 1-wereld die deze eer wordt toebedeeld. Hij voegt zich bij onder andere Mark Webber en voormalig wereldkampioen Jack Brabham. Ook voormalig Dakar-winnaar Toby Price ontving de eer, hij was vorig jaar aan de beurt. Ricciardo zal maar kort kunnen genieten van zijn benoeming, volgende maand wordt zijn nieuwe wagen onthuld en zal de eerste testweek plaatsvinden in Barcelona.

Maar ik moet toegeven dat ik Sainz ook erg mis bij Mclaren, en dat zal ook wel meespelen bij mij.
