Brown geeft O'Ward titelopdracht mee: "Snelste route naar de F1"

Het team van McLaren is al vele tientallen jaren actief in de Formule 1. Maar in de afgelopen jaren verbreedde het team zijn blik. Sinds enkele jaren rijdt de renstal ook in de Amerikaanse Indycar en aankomend seizoen gaat ze ook elektrisch offroad racen in de Extreme E. De ambities zijn overal torenhoog en de verschillende projecten binnen ook door elkaar te lopen.

Vorige maand zag men voor het eerst een glimp van de verbreding van McLaren. Indycar-coureur Patricio O'Ward mocht namelijk de Formule 1-Rookie Test in Abu Dhabi voor zijn rekening nemen. De Mexicaan was dol enthousiast en hij droomt dan ook van een overstap naar de koningsklasse van de autosport.

Voorbeeld

Aankomend Indycar-seizoen wil O'Ward mee doen voor de titel. Een mogelijke winstpartij kan zijn kansen op een permanent Formule 1-zitje alleen maar vergroten. Ook McLaren-kopstuk Zak Brown beaamd dat. Tegenover Motorsport.com is Brown er duidelijk over: "Dat is exact wat ik hem heb gezegd. Het is de snelste route naar de Formule 1. Juan Pablo Montoya, Alex Zanardi, Jacques Villeneuve en Michael Andretti deden het allemaal: winnen in de Indycar."

Rauw talent

Brown denkt dat zijn Mexicaanse pupil alles in zich heeft om in de toekomst in de Formule 1 te rijden. De Amerikaan gelooft heilig in O'Ward: "Dat is je beste kans om in de Formule 1 te gaan rijden. Hij is echt ongelofelijk getalenteerd, hij heeft een geweldige persoonlijkheid. Ik denk dat hij qua rauw talent alles in zich heeft om een Formule 1-coureur te worden."

Vanaf volgend jaar is het rijders duo zonder Ricciardo.
Patricio O'Ward en Lando Norris zijn dan het McLaren duo.

O'Ward is gewoon niet goed genoeg. Dat hele Indyveld mist coureurs die van een meerwaarde zou zijn. De FIA staat te springen om een Amerikaan in de F1, maar halen het allemaal niet als ze naar Europa komen. En ik zie ze ook amper testen. O'Ward maakte uit weinig indruk en daarvoor hebben we Dixon gehad wat jaren eerder, en ondanks dat die kennelijk wel redelijke snelheid toonde, was ook dat gewoon niet genoeg.

Newgarden is de grote man daar, maar werd hier ingemaakt door zijn teamgenoten om vervolgens te gaan klagen over dat hij het geld niet had. Onzin, hij was gewoon niet goed genoeg.

Jammer overigens. O'Ward is op zich best een interessante character. Vind hem bij F1TV wel prima altijd, dus iemand die voor de camera wellicht ook wat te vertellen heeft als coureur.

Voor zijn superlicentiepunten is een vierde plek voldoende. Maar Zack wil natuurlijk liever de IndyCar kampioen in zijn team.
